Eastern Michigan Downs Pittsburgh To Open Falcon Classic

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Eastern Michigan University's women's soccer team opened the 2004 season with a 2-1 win over the University of Pittsburgh Friday afternoon (Aug. 27) at Cochrane Field on the Bowling Green State University campus. The match was the opener of the Falcon Classic.
In the opener, Eastern Michigan got on the board when Jessica Hupe took an errant Pitt pass and blasted a one-timer into the upper far (right) corner of the net from approximately 30 yards out. The unassisted goal gave the Eagles the lead at the 19:31 mark.
The match was halted at 2:14 p.m. with 38:10 remaining in the second half due to lightning. During the heavy storm, the four people foolish enough to remain in the soccer press box witnessed the wrath of Mother Nature. At exactly 3:00 p.m., a bolt of lightning struck the light tower at the northwest corner of Perry Stadium, just beyond the soccer field east of Cochrane Field, emitting a small puff of smoke.
After a delay of an hour and 54 minutes, the match resumed at 4:08 p.m. Shortly thereafter, the Eagles doubled the lead.
After a Pittsburgh foul, EMU was awarded a free kick at the top of the 18-yard box. The kick by Cyndi Mullins was saved by Panther 'keeper Jamie Pelusi, but Sara Schiffbauer was able to convert the rebound into the open net at the 62:44 mark.
Mullins hit the crossbar several minutes later, attempting to give the Eagles a three-goal lead. A few minutes after that, Pitt's Lisa Schulte threatened on a semi-breakaway, but EMU goalie Nikki Allen was able to leap and make the save.
The Panthers cut the lead in half, however, with only 2:22 remaining. A corner kick by Kristina Francois squirted through the hands of Allen, and Corina Sebesta was able to put home the rebound. But, the Panthers could get no closer.
The Eagles held a narrow 15-13 advantage in shots, with a 7-4 edge in shots on goal. Mullins had five of EMU's shots, while all three of Hupe's shots were on goal. Sebesta led the Panthers with a total of four shot attempts.
Allen picked up the win with three saves in her complete-match effort. Pelusi made five stops for Pittsburgh, but took the loss.
The teams return to Cochrane Field on Sunday (Aug. 29) to conclude the Falcon Classic. EMU will meet Duquesne in an 11:00 a.m. kickoff, while Pitt will face host BGSU at 2:00 p.m.
