MORGANTOWN, West Virginia - The Bowling Green State University volleyball team, with the help of tournament MVP Melissa Mohr, won all four matches at the West Virginia Invitational this weekend in Morgantown, West Virginia. The Falcons defeated High Point (3-0) and Robert Morris (3-1) on Saturday and followed that up with wins over West Virginia (3-1) and Delaware State (3-0) on Sunday.
Sunday's action began with a match versus the host school, West Virginia. After losing game one, the Falcons rallied back with three straight wins (28-30, 30-18, 30-21, 32-30) with the help of four players recording double figure kills.
Mohr and Taylor Twite recorded 15 kills each, with Stephanie Swiger and Emily Manser each recording 11 kills.
"West Virginia got to us early and made us panic a little bit in game one," said assistant coach Mark Hardaway. "Once we got past that and were able to settle down we were able to play much better."
Even with all the offensive firepower BGSU was throwing out there, the Falcons on the defensive side of the ball may have even been more impressive. The Brown & Orange held WVU to a .071 team hitting percentage, a season-best for the Falcons. BGSU also had five players record double-figure digs.
Manser led the team with 19, followed by Mohr (17), Elizabeth Simon (13), Maggie Karges (13) and Amber Mareski (12).
In game two on Sunday, the Falcons put a stamp on their tournament crown with a 3-0 sweep of Delaware State (30-13, 30-14, 30-23).
Nearly every Falcon got into the action, with 11 players recording kills and nine different players also registering at least one dig.
Swiger led all hitters with 10 kills, with Mohr recording eight, followed by Ashlei Nofzinger (6) and Manser (6).
Defensively, the Falcons (5-3) were led by Chrissy Gothke who recorded 13 digs to go along with 12 assists for her first double-double of the season. Freshman Madeline Means saw her first significant playing time and recorded eight digs, for second on the team.
As mentioned before, Melissa Mohr was named the tournament MVP, and was joined by Swiger on the all-tournament team.
"Mel did a great job all-around in the tournament," said Hardaway. "She was very deserving of this award."
For the tournament Mohr recorded 43 kills, 45 digs, four solo block, 18 block-assists and hit .224 in 14 total games.
Swiger recorded 45 kills, 10 digs, 11 total blocks and hit a team-high .311 for the tournament.
With now two tournaments behind them, the Falcons travel to Dayton, Ohio, where they will compete in the Wright State Invitational on Sept. 17-18.
