Sharon Named MAC West Special Teams Player of the Week

Cleveland, Ohio - For the second time in his career, junior wide receiver Charles Sharon has been named MAC West Special Teams Player of the Week. Sharon, a junior from Palatka, Florida returned a punt 79 yards for a TD in the Falcons' 49-10 win over Southeast Missouri State. It was the fourth longest punt return in BGSU history and the first punt return TD since November of 2001 (Robert Redd, 61 yards vs. Miami).

West Division
Offense - Jerry Seymour, Central Michigan, running back
(So., Miramar, Fla.)
Provided half of the Chippewas total offense and all of its scoring with 164 rushing yards and a touchdown at Michigan State. His 90 yard touchdown run in the third quarter tied a Spartan Stadium record and is the longest run by an opponent vs. MSU. It also marked Seymour's seventh straight 100-yard game.
Defense - Ray Smith, Northern Illinois, strong safety
(Jr., Crown Point, Ind.)
In a 23-22 win over Southern Illinois, Smith was credited with a team-high 14 tackles (11 solo) and one deflection. Helped limit the Salukis' Brandon Jacobs to 41 rushing yards on 13 attempts.
Special Teams - Charles Sharon, Bowling Green, punt returns

Sharon returned a punt 79 yards for a touchdown, the fourth longest in school history, vs. Southeast Missouri. He also caught three passes for 22 yards and a touchdown.

East Division
Offense - Josh Betts, Miami, quarterback
(Jr., Vandalia, Ohio)
Betts completed 26-of-43 pass attempts for 416 yards and four touchdowns in a 45-26 loss at Cincinnati. Bates also led the team in rushing with 32 yards on seven carries to boost his total offense to 448 yards. His passing yards were the fourth highest in school history and his total offense third highest in program history.
Defense - Jonathan Goddard, Marshall, defensive end
(Sr., Jacksonville, Fla.)
Goddard had nine tackles, including five solo, as well as a fumble return for a touchdown in a 24-21 loss at No. 9 Ohio State. Goddard also recorded two tackles for a loss and was credited with three quarterback hurries. Marshall limited the Buckeyes to just 79 rushing yards.
Special Teams - Brett Briggs, Akron, kickoff returns
(Jr., Barstow, Fla.)
Among his 201 yards of all-purpose yards was 78 yards on three kickoff returns vs. Middle Tennessee State, an average of 26.0 yards per return. Briggs' final return covered 31 yards and gave the Zips solid field position. He added 80 yards rushing on 11 carries and had 43 yards receiving.

Offense - Omar Jacobs, Bowling Green, quarterback, (completed 24-of-47 attempts for 285 yards and four touchdowns vs. Southeast Missouri State); A.J. Harris, Northern Illinois, running back (produced a game-high and career-best 139 yards on 24 carries and caught one pass for three yards vs. Southern Illinois); Kenny Higgins, Toledo, wide receiver (caught a career-high five passes for 92 yards and a touchdown at Kansas).
Defense - Keon Newson, Bowling Green, defensive back (tied for the team lead in tackles with seven and had a tfl and two pass break ups. He also forced and recovered his second fumble of the season vs. Southeast Missouri).
Special Teams - Dan Sheldon, Northern Illinois, punt returns (Set up a third quarter field goal with a 37 yard punt return in a 23-22 win vs. Southern Illinois. Also had a career-long 61 yard touchdown reception. Had four punt returns for 47 yards and one kickoff return for 20 yards, as well as four receptions for 91 yards).
Also nominated - East Division
Offense - Charlie Frye, Akron, quarterback (completed 31 of 44 passes for 399 yards and two touchdown vs. Middle Tennessee State); Alex Haynes, UCF, running back (rushed for 137 yards on 34 carries vs. No. 10 West Virginia); Joshua Cribbs, Kent State, quarterback (20 of 29 passing for 144 yards and two touchdowns, 105 rushing yards on 13 attempts and a touchdown vs. Liberty); Brad Bates, Marshall, wide receiver (caught three passes for 29 yards, including a game-tying touchdown at Ohio State).
Defense - Dionte Earl, Akron, linebacker (12 tackles vs. Middle Tennessee State); J.J. Gibson, Buffalo, defensive back (had a team-high 10 tackles and returned a fumble 57 yards vs. Syracuse for his first career touchdown); Eric Mahl, Kent State, linebacker (13 tackles, an interception vs. Liberty); Tyler Russ, Ohio, outside linebacker (six tackles, three solos, a sack and three tackles for a loss at Pittsburgh).
Special Teams - Emanuel Spann, Marshall, punt returns, (returned two punts for 48 yards vs. Ohio State); Dion Byrum, Ohio, punt returns (two punt returns for 42 yards and added four tackles from his cornerback position at Pittsburgh).
