CLEVELAND, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Bowling Green State University women's basketball sophomore Liz Honegger has been named a Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday morning (Jan. 10). Honegger earns the honor for the second time this season and the fourth time in her Falcon career.
Honegger, a native of Lafayette, Ind., averaged 18.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game as the Falcons posted a pair of road wins to open MAC play last week. Honegger also averaged 3.0 assists, 3.0 steals and 2.0 blocked shots per contest in wins at Buffalo (Jan. 5) and Western Michigan (Jan. 8).
At UB, Honegger had 14 points in a 70-45 win, adding a career-high four assists along with five steals. The steals total fell just one shy of tying her career mark.
Three days later, Honegger scored 23 points as the Falcons picked up a victory, 80-67, at Western. She tied for game honors with eight rebounds vs. the Broncos, and led all players with three blocked shots.
On the week, Honegger shot .455 from the field and made six of her 15 three-point field-goal tries (.400). She also was 11-for-12 (.917) from the free-throw line, including a perfect 8-for-8 performance from the stripe at WMU.
Honegger has scored in double digits in 11 of this season's 13 games to date, including in each of the last 10 contests. She surpassed the 500-point mark for her career in the Western Michigan game, and now has a career total of 517 points.
Honegger has moved into fourth place on the BGSU career list for blocked shots, and now has 76 in her tenure.
On the season, Honegger leads the Falcons in scoring (15.4 ppg), rebounding (8.3 rpg), steals (2.2 spg), blocks (2.0 bpg), field-goal pct., three-point field goals made and free-throw pct.
Honegger earns this week's MAC West Division Player-of-the-Week honor. Miami's Nikki Motto was named the East Division P-O-W.
The Falcons (9-4, 2-0 MAC) of head coach Curt Miller are home for three of the next four games, beginning Wednesday (Jan. 12). BGSU will host Eastern Michigan in a rematch of the 2004 Kraft MAC Tournament's championship game, with tipoff set for 7:00 p.m. at venerable Anderson Arena. Then, BG will travel to Toledo for a 7:00 p.m. contest Saturday (Jan. 15).
