Josh Almanson Named MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week

Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green's Josh Almanson (basketball) and Kent State's Lindsay Shearer (basketball) were named the MAC Scholar Athletes of the Week on Jan. 4, 2005.
Almanson (forward, Sr., 3.14, integrated social studies, Bowling Green, Ohio) has averaged 20.7 points and 3.3 rebounds since the last nominating period. BGSU is 2-1 in that time, and the Falcons are now 7-2 overall and 1-0 in MAC play. Almanson had 22 points, making 8-of-10 shots from the field, in a win over IPFW. In the MAC opener against Buffalo, he had a game-high 26 points, going 11-of-13 from the floor, including 3-for-4 from three-point land. He also had three assists in that game. On the year, Almanson is averaging 19.1 points and 4.6 rebounds, and is shooting .644 from the field. He led the MAC in both scoring and FG pct. as of the latest stats, and has increased his averages/percentages in both categories since that time.
Shearer (forward, Jr., 3.956, business, Minerva, Ohio) averaged 18.5 points, 9.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game as Kent State went 1-1 at the LaSalle Classic in Philadelphia. Shearer opened the LaSalle Classic with the 11th double-double of her career with 12 points, 11 rebounds and three assists in a loss to Georgetown. The junior then added 25 points on 10-of-18 shooting, with seven boards and six assists in an 80-72 overtime victory over the host school LaSalle. In the win over LaSalle, Shearer connected on a career-best three three-pointers.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. The winners are selected by a voting group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
