CLEVELAND, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Bowling Green State University juniors Liz Honegger and Ali Mann have been named to the Mid-American Conference's preseason all-league women's basketball team, the league office announced Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 12). The team is a result of voting by members of the MAC News Media Association.
For the fourth consecutive season, the preseason all-league team consists of five student-athletes from each of the MAC's two divisions.
Mann was also selected to the Preseason All-MAC Team in 2004-05, while Honegger garners the honor for the first time.
The preseason All-MAC East Division team consists of Kent State's Lindsay Shearer and Malika Willoughby and Miami's Cindi Merrill, in addition to Honegger and Mann.
The West Division team is comprised of Eastern Michigan's Ryan Coleman and Nikki Knapp, Stephanie Raymond of Northern Illinois, Toledo's Danielle Bishop and Western Michigan's Carrie Moore.
Last winter, Honegger and Mann helped the Falcons of head coach Curt Miller to a 23-8 overall record and a MAC mark of 13-3. The Brown and Orange won the West Division and earned the league's top overall seed for the Kraft MAC Tournament, then proceeded to win that tournament and advance to the NCAA Championships. BGSU has moved back to the MAC's East Division for the 2005-06 academic year.
Honegger paced the Brown and Orange in scoring last year, with 14.5 points per game, and also led the team in rebounding (8.1 rpg), blocked shots (1.6 rpg) and three-point field goals (1.9 pg). Mann had 13.8 points and 7.4 boards per game to rank second on the team in each category.
In MAC games only, Mann led the team with 15.0 points and 7.8 rebounds per outing, while Honegger finished close behind, with 14.3 points and 7.4 boards. Both players earned All-MAC Second-Team honors.
The two players have helped the Falcons to an overall record of 44-18 and a MAC mark of 24-8 during their first two years on campus.
Honegger, Mann and Miller, along with the other members of the Preseason All-MAC Team and the rest of the league's women's basketball head coaches, will be in attendance at the conference's Basketball Media Day, which is slated for Wednesday, Oct. 26 in downtown Cleveland.
BGSU will open the 2005-06 season with a pair of home games, taking on IPFW (Nov. 18) and St. Francis (Pa.) (Nov. 21) at Anderson Arena next month.
