COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie Saturday night in Columbus, Ohio, behind a stellar performance from senior Jon Horrell, who stopped 41-of-43 shots. The tie snapped a 10-game losing streak to the Buckeyes.
"I thought it was a terrific college hockey game," said head coach Scott Paluch. "It was a real import game for our club after last night. This has been an extremely tough place for us to play for years and I think our guys really rallied this morning."
Things looked bleak early as OSU's Kyle Hood scored on the second shot of the night, a one-timer past Horrell to spot the Buckeyes an early 1-0 lead.
Just over a minute later sophomore Alex Foster answered from behind the net. Moving from his right to left he banked a shot off the left skate of OSU goaltender Dave Caruso into the back of the net.
Senior Mike Falk scored his second goal of the season on a nifty move late in the first period. Sophomore Jonathan Matsumoto threw the puck towards Falk, who cane from the right circle and skated in uncontested to place the puck over the right shoulder of Caruso. The 2-1 advantage was the first BGSU lead over the Buckeyes since January 31, 2004, and was the first lead the Orange and Brown have ever had in Columbus during the Paluch era.
OSU out-shot Bowling Green 20-to-4 in the opening period.
The penalty kill for each team dominated the second period, with each squad going 0-for-4 on the power play in the second stanza, keeping the score at 2-1 entering the third.
Four minutes into the third OSU forward John Dingle record the game-tying goal, scooting the puck through the five-hole of Horrell, sending the game to overtime.
Despite being out-shot by a 5-to-0 clip in overtime, BGSU had the best opportunity to come away with the victory late in the extra session. With roughly 1:30 left in overtime, Matsumoto got a step on the OSU defense, moved in on Caruso, but fired a shot off the left post.
Horrell earned the number-one star of the night stopping 41-of-43 shots, making several crowd pleasing saves throughout the night. Bowling Green had 19 shots for the contest.
"We got some terrific saves from Jon Horrell and key efforts from the penalty kill tonight," said Paluch. "I said all week long that Ohio State is a top-two team in the country with the experience they have and how much pressure they can put on you in so many ways. I was just so proud on how our team responded tonight."
Matsumoto and Foster each earned two points on the night. Matsumoto has recorded a point in eight straight games, while Foster extended his streak to six games with a point.
For the night BGSU was 0-for-7 on the power play, while OSU was held in check, going 1-for-8.
Up next for the Falcons is a home-and-home with Ferris State. Bowling Green will play host to the Bulldogs on Oct. 27, before heading to Big Rapids on Oct. 29. Both contests begin at 7:05 p.m.
