EAST LANSING, Mich. - Several members of the Bowling Green State University tennis team continued action at the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships Saturday (Oct. 22). The tournament, hosted by Michigan State University, is being held at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
In singles play, Ashley Jakupcin defeated Detroit's Annie Moore in straight sets, winning by identical scores of 6-4, 6-4. That put the Falcon junior into the second round against Northwestern's Cristelle Grier, the top-seeded player in the entire 64-player bracket. Grier picked up a straight-sets win (6-2, 6-0) to knock Jakupcin out of the main draw.
Senior Heidi Romer also participated in the main draw after posting three wins in the qualifying rounds, which began Thursday. In the main draw, Romer suffered a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Indiana's Dora Vastag, the 10th seed in the tourney.
Jakupcin faced a top-seeded opponent twice on Saturday, as she teamed with junior Jenna Nussbaum in the doubles main draw. The Falcon duo had won a pair of matches on Friday to advance to the round of 16, but lost to Northwestern's top-seeded team of Grier and Alexis Proussis, 8-2, Saturday morning.
The Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships will run through Tuesday (Oct. 25).
