COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University softball team posted a 2-1 record in second-day action at the Ohio Collegiate Charity Classic Sunday afternoon (Oct. 2). The tournament, which featured 10 schools from the state of Ohio, was held at Fred Beekman Park in Columbus.
On Sunday, the Falcons suffered a loss for the first time in the fall season, falling to Kent State University by a 5-3 score. But, BG rebounded for a 2-1 win over the University of Akron and a 4-1 decision over Wright State University.
In the opener, senior Gina Rango highlighted the BG offense with a two-run homer against the Golden Flashes. Classmate Liz Vrabel threw a complete game in the UA contest, with Rango and sophomore Allison Vallas combining on a hit-and-run play to score the winning run in the fifth inning. With Rango on first base, Vallas hit an opposite-field double into the gap to score the runner. Vrabel held the Zips off the board over the final two frames.
BGSU used a four-run sixth inning to erase a 1-0 deficit and defeat WSU. The Falcons tied the score at 1-1, before freshman Hayley Wiemer hit a three-run homer to give BG the lead for good.
Sophomore Emily Gouge pitched three scoreless innings vs. the Raiders, while Wiemer allowed a single run in her three innings of work, and Vrabel worked a scoreless seventh.
The Falcons will close the fall portion of the schedule with Sunday's (Oct. 9) Alumnae game, beginning at noon at the BGSU Softball Field.
