BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - With such an inexperienced squad, Bowling Green State University (2-8-1, 0-2-0) has been in need of senior leadership to help acclimate the younger players to the game. Although the Falcons saw that leadership in senior captains Dave Belfort and Omari Aldridge scoring attack, they were unable to overcome the lead the Western Michigan Broncos (5-5-1, 2-0-0) took early in the first half.
Broncos' Nashir Carabali broke the ice with just under two minutes being taken off the clock. Approximately ten minutes later, WMU took a two goal advantage on a give and go between Tom Oatley and Nashir Caraballi.
"We were slow to get going. Once we did we had some pressure on the ball, created some opportunities and we did some good things," said coach Fred Thompson.
Belfort sent the Falcons into the half down just one goal when he connected with Matt Yanick on the opposite side of the keeper. Belfort's shot in traffic from just outside the goal was his first of his senior campaign.
"We have been asking the midfielders to arrive in the attack to score goals," said Thompson. "He did that at the right time and it is always fun to watch Dave score."
The Broncos started the second half much like the first when Dan Picmann found the net by way of Edgar Rivera and Tom Oatley at the 53:16 mark.
Picmann's goal gave the Broncos second two goal lead of the match
"We were focused on enthusiasm and energy as a team," said Thompson. "It's easy to get energy when you are down especially when you want to fight back when playing at home."
The Falcons found the missing energy from offensive surge late in the match off another close range goal which was tapped in by Omari Aldridge who found himself deep in the keepers territory.
Although they continued to find shots on goal, BGSU was unable to cut the scoring deficit.
Keeper Paul Shoemaker, despite being shaken up in a physical play in the second half, finished the match with two saves on 12 shots. WMU's Brent Miller was valuable to the Broncos saving five of the Falcons attempts.
The Falcons will spend the upcoming weekend on the road. First, the Falcons will trek to the University of Buffalo on Friday to continue their MAC dominated October schedule. The Orange and Brown's match will kick-off at 7:00 p.m. The Falcons will also face a grueling road opponent when they travel to the University of Akron to take on the No. 2 Zips. Sunday's match will begin at 3:30 p.m.
