BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Bowling Green State University women's soccer senior Ali Shingler has been named to the Soccer Buzz Elite Team of the Week, the online magazine announced Thursday morning (Nov. 10). Shingler earns the national honor for the first time this season and the second time in her Falcon career.
Shingler's award marks the eighth time in the history of the Falcon women's soccer program that a BGSU player has been named to a national weekly team, and the second in as many days. On Wednesday, senior Julie Trundle was named to the Soccer America Women's College Team of the Week.
Shingler, a native of Grove City, Ohio, helped the top-seeded Falcons to the Mid-American Conference Tournament title last week. She posted three shutouts, for a total of 310 scoreless minutes, as the Brown and Orange blanked Toledo, Miami and Kent State to win the league tourney crown and advance to the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive year.
The Falcons battled to scoreless ties vs. both Toledo and KSU in the league tourney, but BGSU advanced via penalty kicks, 3-2, in each match. Shingler made a total of 12 saves in the three games, and had three more stops during the penalty-kick phases vs. the Rockets and the Golden Flashes. She was one of four Falcons named to the MAC All-Tournament Team.
Shingler has not allowed a goal in the last 347:19, since early in the second half of the final regular-season game (Oct. 28 at UT). She ended her home career by posting a whopping 757 scoreless minutes at Cochrane Field, where BGSU has not allowed a goal since the Sept. 11 match vs. Eastern Illinois.
Shingler has set a school record for wins, with 14 this season. BGSU has also set a school mark for shutouts in a season, with nine, and Shingler has been in goal in all nine matches. She has seven complete-game shutouts, and played at least half of the match in each of the other two.
Shingler and the Falcons (14-6-2) will head to Notre Dame, Ind., this weekend, taking on Michigan State in Friday's (Nov. 11) NCAA Championships first-round match at Alumni Field.
The Soccer Buzz Elite Team of the Week is comprised of 11 players from around the country, chosen on the basis of their play the previous week. Shingler is one of just three players to be a repeat winner on this week's team.
