FALCONS HOST 2005 NCAA PARTICIPANT OAKLAND
The Falcons, coming off an 85-50 win over Urbana, will host Oakland, the 2005 Mid-Continent Conference Tournament Champion, at Anderson Arena, Wednesday night. The Falcons have won both meetings in Anderson Arena, 70-59, in 1998 and 75-68, in 2002. The Golden Grizzlies snapped BGSU's six-game winning streak last year, 77-53, in Rochester Hills.
OU is 3-1 this season and is coming off a 77-53 home win over Duquesne. The Golden Grizzlies are coached by 1978 BGSU graduate Greg Kampe who was an Academic All-MAC performer in football and basketball for the Falcons.
SAMARCO NAMED MAC EAST PLAYER OF THE WEEK
BGSU junior Martin Samarco has been named the Mid-American Conference East Player of the Week, the league office announced November 28.. Samarco earns the honor for the first time this season and first for his career.
Samarco has averaged 18.3 points and five rebounds in his first four games with the Falcons. He is coming off a 23 point performance against Urbana where he made 9 of 13 shots including, 4 of 5 from three-point range. He also had a team-high 21 points in the Falcons' 72-71 win over Virginia Tech at the NABC Classic, giving the Falcons their first win over an ACC opponent since 1967. He is shooting 46.2 from three-point range.
NOTES FROM THE URBANA GAME
BGSU improved to 9-0 in home openers under Dan Dakich... The Falcons also are 6-0 under Dakich against the Blue Knights. .. BGSU improved to 25-2 since the 2001 season when holding an opponent under 59 points...The Falcons also improved to 35-5 since 2000-01 when shooting over 50 percent.
The Falcons are now 16-1 over the last three-plus seasons when scoring 80 points or more...BGSU is 26-1 in Anderson Arena in its last 27 non-conference games...With its 53.8% effort from three-point range, BGSU is making 42.6% of its three-point shots this season...The Falcons won the battle of the boards, 36-31, which is the third straight game that BGSU has captured the rebounding battle...The Falcons shot an identical 15 of 29 from the field each half.
FALCON PLAYER FACTS
Junior Martin Samarco is fifth in the league in scoring averaging 18.2 points per game... he also leads the league in three-point field goals with 12...he is shooting a team-best 84.6% from the line this season as well... junior Matt Lefeld is eighth in the league in rebounding with a 6.7 average... senior Mawel Soler is second in the league in field goal percentage and has made 16 of 20 attempts from the field this year... Soler has been a solid contributor averaging nine points and five rebounds.
Freshman Erik Marschall is one of the top freshman in the MAC averaging 11.8 points and 5.8 rebounds... he is shooting 58.1% from the field... junior John Floyd is averaging 11.8 points and three assists... he is in his second year with the Falcons and played his freshman year at Oakland...senior guard Steven Wright, the team's leading returning scorer from last season, has yet to play in a game this season due to a preseason leg injury.
Sophomore guard Perrick "Moon" Robinson has started three games and has averaged 4.3 points... he is tied for second on the team in free throws made with 10... freshman Darryl Clements is averaging 3.8 points and three rebounds per game and is averaging 22.5 minutes per game...Junior Patrick Phillips is playing a career-high 11.7 minutes per game... he is averaging 2.3 points and 2.7 rebounds.
