CLEVELAND, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Bowling Green State University women's basketball junior Liz Honegger has been named a Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday evening (Nov. 28). Honegger earns the honor for the first time this season and the fifth time in her Falcon career.
Honegger, a center from Lafayette, Ind., averaged 14.0 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.3 blocked shots as the Falcons posted a 3-0 record last week. She shot a combined 47.1 percent from the field in victories over Saint Francis (Pa.) (77-55; Nov. 21), IUPUI (66-55; Nov. 25) and Indiana (68-50; Nov. 26).
The latter two of those victories came at IU's Hampton Inn Classic, where Honegger was named the tourney MVP. She had a game- and BGSU season-high 25 points, including 18 in the first half, in the win over IUPUI. In the win over the Hoosiers, Honegger -- the lone Indiana native on the BGSU roster -- had all 12 of her points in a four-minute span in the second half. She hit four three-point field goals during that time as the Falcons built the lead from five to 15 points.
Honegger has now had the three highest-scoring games of her career in her home state. In the IU game, she pulled down the 500th rebound of her BGSU tenure.
On the season, Honegger is averaging a team-high 15.0 points per game, along with 5.0 rebounds per outing. In addition to scoring, she also leads the Brown and Orange in blocks (1.8 per game) and three-point field goals (2.5 made per game).
The Hampton Inn Classic marked BGSU's first title in a regular-season tournament in 16 years.
Honegger was named the MAC's Player of the Week in the East Division. Central Michigan's Chasidy Myers was the West Division recipient.
The Falcons of head coach Curt Miller, off to a 4-0 start for the first time since 1991-92, head to the Motor City for a Wednesday (Nov. 30) game vs. Detroit. Then, BG will return home for a Dec. 6 game vs. Duquesne, beginning at 7:00 p.m. at venerable Anderson Arena.
