BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Catherine Marosszeky headed home a corner kick off the foot of Lisa Kurz in overtime, giving Kent State University a 1-0 win over Central Michigan University Friday (Nov. 4). The match, the first Mid-American Conference Tournament semifinal of the day, was held at Cochrane Field.
With the win, the Golden Flashes, seeded seventh for the MAC Tournament, advance to Sunday's (Nov. 6) championship, and will face the winner of the second semifinal, between Miami and Bowling Green. KSU is now 9-8-4 on the season. CMU, the tourney's sixth seed, sees the season come to an end at 7-10-3.
The goal came on KSU's first shot on goal of the day. At the other end of the field, the Flashes' Alicia Fernandez made 11 saves, including seven in the first half.

The goal came on KSU's fourth corner kick of the day. By contrast, Central had 13 corners, including seven in the first half.
Marosszeky's goal, her sixth of the season, puts the Flashes into the MAC Tournament's championship match for the first time in school history.
Central had the game's first eight shot attempts, including a good scoring chance by Laura Roberts after a KSU giveaway with less than four minutes elapsed. But, Roberts' shot was thwarted by KSU's Fernandez.
Approximately 15 minutes into the match, KSU's Kimberly Dimitroff received the ball in the CMU end of the field and headed toward goal, although the assistant referee had his flag up for offsides. Dimitroff deked a defender and fired the ball into the net, but the shot was waved off.
Approximately five minutes later, Roberts and Alison Heydorn worked a give-and-go that resulted in a Heydorn shot toward the far post. But, Fernandez again was equal to the task, making a diving stop.
Kent's lone shot attempt in the first half was a long shot that was well off the mark. Perhaps the Flashes' best chance of the opening 45 minutes came in the final seconds, as CMU goalkeeper Annie Decker made a dive to break up a crossing attempt by Jen Frey.
In the opening minute of the second half, a shot from CMU's Heydorn from close range was deflected over the bar for a corner kick, and the match remained scoreless.
With 30 minutes left in regulation, KSU's Raetta Hord blasted a one-timer, volleying a loose ball that came outside the 18-yard box, but her shot was just high.
Seven minutes later, Frey made a nifty move to lose her defender along the end line, and slid a pass to Danie Irwin, but Irwin's shot was high.
What appeared to be a grade-A scoring threat by the Chippewas with 14 minutes left was waved off, as offsides was called just prior to a shot by Rosamaria Rago.
Just two minutes later, a golden opportunity went by the wayside for the Golden Flashes, as a cross slid just pass an open Dimitroff in the middle of the penalty area. The teams went to overtime still looking to break the scoreless draw.
Three-and-a-half minutes into the extra period, KSU's Kurz took a pass from Hord, cut the ball back to elude her defender, and prepared to shoot as she entered the penalty area. She didn't quite get all of the ball, however, hitting her foot on the ground before she shot, and the ball bounded right to Dimitroff, whose shot was just over the crossbar.
Less than four minutes later, however, KSU won a corner kick, setting the stage for Marosszeky's heroics. The goal broke a scoreless streak of approximately 399 minutes for the Flashes, who had not scored since a 2-1 win over Akron on Oct. 23. KSU has not allowed any goals since that UA match, however, battling to a 0-0 tie with Buffalo to close the regular season, before playing to another scoreless draw at second-seeded Ball State in Tuesday's (Nov. 1) MAC Tournament quarterfinal. KSU advanced to the semifinals, 3-1, on penalty kicks.
