ROCHESTER, Mich. - Quoting Bowling Green State University women's basketball head coach Curt Miller after the Falcons' 72-59 win at Oakland University Thursday night...
"That was a big win; I'm very excited to head home at 8-0. We were very gutty -- that's a very dangerous Oakland team that can score points in bunches. Their 'big three' players (Anne Hafeli, Jayme Wilson and Nicole Piggott) could be all-conference in a lot of leagues in the country, and they are very difficult to defend. They don't lose very often here, and they are a very good offensive team. To hold them to 59 points and those 'big three' to a combined 27 points -- we're ecstatic."
(On BGSU's withstanding a slow start to the game)
"We missed a couple of shots we're capable of making early, and they (OU) came out hot. We just needed to get our legs back underneath us and catch our second wind after a long layoff. They had scored 12 points by the first media timeout, and then we were able to hold them to 16 points the rest of the half. Sixteen points in 15 minutes -- I'll take that any time, and I thought we played a good defensive first half."
(On the play of Liz Honegger)
"Liz was ready to play ... she wanted us to come back with a win, and I'm glad that she backed it up. The other thing is that Oakland essentially plays five guards, or four guards and a forward. You have to guard them, but they also have to guard you, and there's a clear size advantage there for us. Liz has to chase them around all night (on defense), but if you can get her the ball down low, or if she gets position, they don't have the size to match someone like Liz in the low post. That rebounding performance was great, but just as important was that 19 points. One of our big points of emphasis tonight was points in the paint, either off penetration or throwing the ball inside. They have so many talented wings that you have to outscore that team in the paint, or you're in trouble."
