BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University hockey team scored the first three goals in Friday night's action, before surrendering five unanswered goals to Clarkson, en route to a 6-4 loss inside the Ice Arena. Four different Falcons recorded goals on the night.
It is a real disappointing loss," said head coach Scott Paluch. "I thought the guys played extremely hard. We did a lot of things real well. Our power play was efficient early on and I thought we played a terrific third period in a tied game. That is the way you have to play a third period of a tied game, to win the game, and it didn't happen. We missed to many breakaways. I thought their goalie played extremely well."
Sophomore Derek Whitmore scored the opening goal of the game, coming on the power play. Senior Don Morrison fired a shot from the point with junior James Unger redirecting the puck onto Whitmore's stick, who placed the puck into the back of the net. Whitmore's goal was the lone goal of the first period.
Unger kept his hot streak alive at the 2:34 mark of the second period after all five Falcons jammed the front of the Clarkson net, with Unger able to get enough of the puck to squirt the puck just past the goal line. Unger has seven points in his last six games. Alex Foster and Jonathan Matsumoto picked up helpers on the goal.
Morrison extended the Falcons lead to 3-0 after firing a shot from the point through several Clarkson defenders. Morrison's second goal of the season came at the 4:04 mark of the second.
Clarkson (10-4-1) finally got on the scoreboard at the 11:46 mark of the second after Michael Grenzy recorded his second goal of the season. The Golden Knight goal snapped freshman Jimmy Spratt's scoreless streak at 62:19, the longest of his career.
The Golden Knights would post two more goals before the end of the second at the 14:19 and 19:49 mark to send the two squads into the locker room, tied 3-3.
Clarkson got their first lead of the night just 1:45 into the final period after Mike Sullivan recorded his sixth goal of the season. Shawn Weller extended the lead to 5-3 eight minutes later, but the Falcons would not go down without a fight.
In the final 10 minutes of the contest BGSU out shot Clarkson 10-1, including one goal from Matsumoto, his eighth of the season.
Still trailing 5-4, the Falcons pulled Spratt for the extra attacker, as the Falcons recorded several opportunities to tie up the contest, before Jeff Genovy recorded an empty net goal as time expired.
For the night Clarkson netminder stopped 37-of-41 shots, while Spratt turned-aside 23-of-28 Golden Knight shot attempts.
Up next for the Falcons will be a home contest with St. Lawrence, tomorrow night. Face-off is set for 7:05.
Brandon Svendsen Update
Late in the third period freshman Brandon Svendsen crashed into the BGSU net as well as the boards and remained on the ice for several minutes before being taken away to Wood County Hospital on a stretcher. Svendsen had complete movement in his arms and legs, but due to precautionary reasons, was being taken to the hospital for x-rays.
