Columbus, Ohio - Bowling Green's comeback at #7 Ohio State on Friday night fell just short as the Falcons dropped a 3-2 decision at Value City Arena in front of 9,683. BGSU had fought back from a 3-0 deficit midway through the second period.
The Falcons held off the Buckeyes for most of the second period until Bryce Beaudoin scored his second goal of the game and 17th of the season at 10:58. BGSU freshman Jonathan Matsumoto was the first to cut into the Buckeye lead with his 12th goal of the year at 17:03 when he deflected a shot by Alex Foster. Mike Falk also earned an assist.
Then sophomore James Unger notched his ninth goal of the year at 14:25 of the third period to get the Falcons to within one, 3-2. Brett Pilkington and Derek Whitmore earned the assists. BGSU pulled goalie Jordan Sigalet with 1:50 left in the third period but could not tally the game-tying goal.
"I was real proud of the way our guys got back and gave us an opportunity at the end," said BGSU Coach Scott Paluch. "Ultimately, special teams was the difference in the hockey game. I thought their penalty kill was outstanding and their power play got them out to a lead."
OSU capitalized on its first two power plays of the game to stake a 2-0 lead by midway through the first period. The first PPG came from Bryce Anderson at just 1:44 while Beaudoin netted the second extra-man goal at 8:40. OSU held a 16-10 shot advantage in the opening period.
BGSU held the Buckeyes scoreless on their final five power plays and outshot OSU 14-6 in the third period. OSU finished with a 36-32 shot advantage for the game. OSU was 2-for-7 on the power play and BGSU was 0-for-7 on the power play.
"We've been in this situation quite a bit and been able to get ourselves back into a lot of games," said Paluch. "Our team is going to keep going regardless of the score."
There was nearly 20 minutes of stoppage late in the second period when on back-to-back shifts, OSU slapshots cracked the glass and required Value City Arena workers to replace the glass.
BGSU falls to 13-10-4 overall and 10-8-3 in the CCHA, while OSU improves to 21-7-3 overall and 18-4-1 in the CCHA. The two teams end the series on Saturday beginning at 7:05 p.m.
