Falcons Finish Fifth At MAC Championships

ATHENS, Ohio - The Falcons concluded their third and final day in Athens, Ohio for the Mid-American Conference Swimming and Diving Championships. Bowling Green came out with a fifth place finish and a total of 404.5 points. The Falcons were 30.5 points away from fourth place Ball State. The 2005 MAC Champions were Miami with a total of 562.5 points. This was Miami's fourth title in a row and 15th in league history.
The spotlight was on Stephanie Buckner who claimed a victory for Bowling Green in the 100-yard freestyle with an NCAA standard B qualifying time of 51.15. This win marks the first time since 1988 that someone from BGSU (Shari Williams) has won the event at the MAC Championships. Buckner's time broke the school record set by Williams of 51.70. Her personal best in this event from 2004 was 52.24. Buckner was also given All-MAC First Team honors.
Kara Ohngren, who was named to the All-MAC Second Team, placed fourth in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 17:02.75. Another member of the All-MAC Second Team, Dana Schultz, placed third in the 200 butterfly with a finishing time of 2:04.52.
The third Falcon named to the All-MAC Second Team was Caroline Keating who was a member of the fourth place finishing 400 yard freestyle relay team of Stephanie Buckner, Lauren McClave and Jessica Guinness. The relay team finished with a time of 3:28.56. Keating also brought home a fifth place finish in the 200 freestyle on day two as well as a third place finish in the 500 free which broke a BGSU record on day one of the championships.
Despite last years third place finish, this is the highest finish since the 1996-97 season when the Falcons also finished fifth.
