Big Rapids, Mich. - Bowling Green rebounded from a 5-2 deficit with three unanswered goals in the third period to earn a tie at Ferris State on Friday night in Big Rapids, Mich. BGSU's Bryan Dobek scored his first two goals of the season, including the game-tying-goal, to pace the Falcon offense.
"I think it's a real big point to get for our team," said BGSU Coach Scott Paluch. "We put ourselves in a hole by letting Ferris get off to a real good start. When we got to 5-5 it was real gritty play. I think our guys did a great job of staying with it after a slow start."
FSU outshot the Falcons 16-7 in the opening period and connected on three of those shots. The first came off the stick of Matt Stefanishion at 5:54 with just 13 seconds remaining on the Bulldog power play. Just under 10 minutes later, the freshman scored his second of the game and 10th of the season to give FSU a 2-0 lead (15:03). Greg Rallo scored the third goal of the opening period at 18:54, his fifth of the season.
The Falcons cut its deficit to one when freshman Michael Hodgson scored at 10:05 of the second period and junior Bryan Dobek scored 22 seconds later to make it a 3-2 contest. Jon Sitko and Dobek assisted on Hodgson's goal, and John Mazzei and Alex Rogosheske assisted on Dobek's goal.
However, FSU rattled off two more goals before the end of the period to go up 5-2 heading into the third period.
That's when things got interesting for the Falcons. Junior Jon Horrell started the third period in net for the Falcons in place of starter Jordan Sigalet and played very well, stopping all 10 shots he faced in the third stanza. Freshman Derek Whitmore scored at 2:10, sophomore James Unger scored at 2:53, and Dobek scored the game-tying goal at 12:19 to send the game into overtime, 5-5. In the overtime, BGSU had five shots to FSU's two, but neither team scored to make it a final 5-5 verdict.
"Great credit to Jon Horrell to come in and do exactly what you need in that situation," said Paluch. "He made a real big save on one of the better players in our league on a breakaway. He did a tremendous job for us.
"I thought Dobek had a great jump. I think tonight, to go along with his overall game, he showed some confidence in his skill and made those big plays."
BGSU held a 38-35 shot advantage and finished 0-for-4 on the power play. FSU was 1-for-4. Mike Brown stopped 33 of 38 shots faced, Sigalet stopped 18 of 23 shots faced, and Horrell stopped all 12 shots he faced.
The Falcons are now 12-9-4 overall and 9-7-3 in the CCHA, while FSU moved to 9-16-4 overall and 4-13-4 in the league. The point kept BGSU in fifth place in the CCHA and is still just two points back of fourth-place Nebraska-Omaha, who tied at Notre Dame.
BGSU and FSU conclude their series on Saturday with a special 5:35 p.m. faceoff time in Big Rapids, Mich.
