LAS VEGAS, Nev. - North Carolina State's Shaina Ervin pitched a complete game two-hitter, lifting the Wolfpack to a 5-1 win over the Bowling Green State University softball team Thursday afternoon (March 10). The game was the opening contest for both teams at the Eller Media Stadium Classic.
With the victory, the Pack improves to 23-10 on the season, while the Falcons fall to 1-10.
NC State got more than enough runs with a five-run third inning, with BGSU able to plate just one fourth-inning marker. The Falcons' run came when starting pitcher Lindsay Heimrich singled, and advanced all the way to third on an error. Heimrich would score on a suicide squeeze bunt by senior Kristen Anderson.
Other than Heimrich, only sophomore Megan McPherson was able to get a hit against Ervin, who walked four and struck out one.
Heimrich did not allow a hit through the first two innings, but could not get out of the third, as NC State sent 11 batters to the plate. Lee Hasper's two-run single started the scoring, and the Pack had five singles in the inning.
Heimrich struck out one batter without issuing a walk. Junior Liz Vrabel threw three-and-two-thirds innings of hitless relief, striking out the last two batters in the third frame after entering the game. The only baserunner to reach against Vrabel came on a Falcon error in the seventh.
NC State had a total of five hits, from five different players.
The Falcons were scheduled to return to the diamond late Thursday, taking on host UNLV.
