Bowling Green, Ohio - Alaska Fairbanks scored early and often at Bowling Green on Friday night in winning game one of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association playoff series. The best-of-three series now goes to Saturday, March 12, at 7:05 p.m. in the BGSU Ice Arena.
UAF's Ryan McLeod took the opening faceoff, skated past a couple of Falcons, and scored on BGSU goalie Jordan Sigalet just five seconds into the contest. However, on the next faceoff, McLeod won it to Kyle Greentree, who threw it around the back of the net to a streaking McLeod, who buried his second goal just 13 seconds into the game, eight seconds apart.
Kelly Czuy then scored at 3:19 of the first period for a 3-0 Nanooks lead. BGSU freshman Alex Foster finally stopped the bleeding when he stole the puck from a UAF player and skated the length of the ice and scored on UAF goalie Wylie Rogers at 6:56 of the first period. UAF went into the first intermission with a 3-1 lead and a 17-10 shot advantage.
The visitors scored two more goals in the second period, thanks to Jared Sylvestre (3:34) and Lucas Burnett (17:03) for a 5-1 lead after two periods.
Junior Jon Horrell entered at goal for the Falcons to begin the third period, in place of Sigalet. Horrell played well, stopping eight-of-nine shots faced in the period. But, UAF scored the first goal of the period, thanks to Curtis Fraser at 3:37, to stake a 6-1 lead on the home team.
BGSU put something together with goals less than two minutes apart early in the third period. First, Jonathan Matsumoto scored at 4:37 with assists from Mike Falk and Foster. Then freshman Ben Geelan scored at 6:21 with assists from Ryan Minnabarriet and Don Morrison to cut the deficit to 6-3. The Falcons had several more chances in the period, but could not get any closer.
