CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Bowling Green State University softball team scored in each of the final four innings for a 6-1 victory over Rutgers Saturday afternoon (March 19). Earlier in the day, the Falcons had picked up a 2-1 win over East Carolina, with both games held at the Hoo's Who Tournament at the University of Virginia.
With the wins, the Falcons improve to 7-14 on the year, and 3-1 in the tournament. BGSU enters Sunday's (March 20) action as the second seed in the five-team tourney, and will face third-seeded ECU at 11:00 a.m. The winner moves on to the championship game at approximately 1:00 p.m.
The ECU game shaped up to be a battle between pitchers Stephanie Hayes of the Pirates, and junior Liz Vrabel of the Falcons. Each hurler gave up just one hit through the first three innings.
The game was scoreless through four frames, before the Pirates' Mandi Nichols led off the bottom of the fifth with a homerun. But, BG would answer with a run in each of the last two innings.
In the sixth, sophomore Jeanine Baca led off with a single, and classmate Emmy Ramsey's sacrifice bunt moved her to second. Junior Gina Rango's single up the middle plated Baca with the tying run.
In the seventh, freshman Allison Vallas started things with a single, and freshman D.J. DeLong's sac bunt moved pinch-runner Kari Steigerwald up a base. Steigerwald took third on a groundout, and pinch-hitter Natalie Armintrout singled up the middle to drive home what would prove to be the winning run.
In the bottom of the seventh, Vrabel got three infield grounders to pick up the win. She allowed only one run and three hits, walking two batters and striking out six.
Hayes allowed two runs and six hits in defeat, with one walk and one strikeout.
Rango had two hits to lead the Falcons, while Armintrout, Baca, Vallas and junior Abby Habicht had one apiece. Nichols had two of ECU's three hits.
Against Rutgers, BGSU also had trailed early, before scoring the game's last six runs. The Scarlet Knights plated a run off freshman Emily Gouge in the third inning, with Stephanie Johannsen picking up the RBI.
But, the Falcons scored one run each in the fourth and fifth innings, then had two runs in both the sixth and seventh frames.
BGSU pounded out nine hits in the win, including doubles by Rango and senior Kristen Anderson. Both Rango and sophomore Megan McPherson had two hits in the game, with Rango driving in two of BGSU's runs.
Baca scored two runs, while sophomore Angie Ortiz had a run and an RBI.
Gouge allowed just two hits in her three innings of work. Vrabel threw four innings of no-hit relief to pick up the win, with one walk and eight strikeouts.
The Scarlet Knights' Jessica Crosby allowed two runs (one earned) in five innings, giving up five hits and walking five Falcons. Maggie Geraldi surrendered four runs (three earned) and four hits in two innings, walking four.
