FULLERTON, Calif. - The Bowling Green State University softball team showed signs of breaking out of a scoring slump, but the Falcons could not snap a lengthy losing streak, falling to Nevada by a 6-4 score Saturday night (March 5). The game, part of the 2005 Worth Invitational, was held at the Titan Softball Complex.
With the win, the Pack improves to 7-9 on the year, while dropping BGSU to 0-9 on the season. The Falcons' nine-game losing streak is the team's longest since the 1997 season (March 28-April 5), and BGSU has not lost as many games to start a season since the 1989 squad began with a mark of 0-10.
The Falcons outhit the Pack, 9-5, but three of Nevada's five hits were homeruns, off the bats of Kristin Stith, Jiliane Hartfiel and Candice Rainwater.
Nevada erased a 2-0 BGSU lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and four more in the fifth. The Falcons, who had scored twice in the third frame, got a pair of runs in the seventh as well.
Three Falcons had multiple-hit games, as sophomore Kari Steigerwald was 2-for-3 with a run scored and a run batted in, while junior Gina Rango had two hits in four at-bats, with a triple and two RBI. Junior Lindsay Heimrich also had a 2-for-4 game.
Junior Jeanine Baca had a hit and scored a pair of runs, while freshman D.J. DeLong had a hit and a run scored. BGSU scored a season-high four runs, after scoring a total of just five runs through the year's first eight games.
Rainwater, 2-for-3 in the game, was the lone Nevada player with more than one hit. She also got the win in the circle, allowing eight hits and three earned runs before giving way to Jordan McPherson with one down in the seventh inning. Rainwater walked two batters but struck out four.
McPherson got the final two outs, one via strikeout, allowing one hit. She picked up her second save of the year.
Junior Liz Vrabel took the loss, allowing five runs on three hits and five walks. Vrabel had four strikeouts in four-and-a-third innings of work. Heimrich got the final five outs, surrendering two hits and a run. Heimrich walked one batter and whiffed one.
The Falcons' road gets no easier, as BGSU plays nationally-ranked Northwestern on Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m. (Noon Eastern). Northwestern, ranked #23 in the nation, is coming off a win over #3 Stanford on Saturday night.
