Bowling Green, Ohio - Redshirt freshmen Corey Partridge caught six passes for 140 yards and three TDs and freshman Luke Alexander, who graduated from high school early to enroll at BGSU in January, hauled in five passes for 108 yards and two scores to lead the Orange squad to a 45-42 win over the White team in BGSU's annual spring football game.
"It was good to go out and do well," said junior quarterback Omar Jacobs who completed 24 of 38 passes for 441 yards and six TDs for the winning team. "It's also nice that we can have some time off."
Freshman Anthony Turner completed his first 10 passes and gave the White team a 14-0 lead with scoring strikes of 14 yards and 38 yards to senior Derrick Lett.
"We had a lot of young guys come our and step up today and that is great to see," said head coach Gregg Brandon. "We are still a work in progress and we have some holes to fill, but we'll get there."
On the next play, Jacobs connected on a 56-yard effort to senior Charles Sharon and three plays later found freshman Marques Parks on an eight-yard score. Jacobs hit Partridge on a 22-yard scoring toss right before the end of the first quarter.
Senior P.J. Pope, who finished with 108 yards on 11 carries, scored on a 43-yard run to give the White a 21-14 lead. Senior Joe Timchenko kicked the only field goal of the game, a 36-yarder for the Orange. A 14-yard TD pass from Jacobs to Alexander gave the Orange their first lead of the game.
Senior Steve Sanders scored on a spectacular 61-yard run 38 seconds later to give the White their final lead of the game at 28-24. Jacobs would lead his squad to three scores in the final five minutes. He hit Partridge for a five-yard effort, Alexander on a 68-yard toss and and Partridge again for a 26-yarder to build a 45-28 lead.
Turner would hit Sanders for an 80-yard score on the next play and the Orange would go into intermission with a 45-35 lead.
After playing a conventional 30-minute half, Brandon chose to play the second half with a running clock with 12 minutes in each quarter.
The defense stiffened with the White team getting the only second-half score on a 14-yard pass from Turner to junior Rueben Ruiz on the first play of the fourth quarter.
Things did get interesting when junior Van Johnson, a converted quarterback, intercepted Jacobs and returned the ball 57 yards to the 17 yard line with just under three minutes to go. However, the White team could not cash in and redshirt freshman Don Sprenkel recovered a fumble for the Orange that sealed the game.
"I thought defensively we were much better in the second half," said Brandon. "I thought Devon Parks was outstanding in the first half and Van Johnson came up big as well.
Quick Hits
Senior Nate Fry had seven punts for a 40.5 average while kicking for both teams.
Timchenko was seven for seven on PATs, while redshirt freshmen Eric Soltis connected on two extra points and Gregg Coreno and Kurt Woodruff had one.
Orange Defense
Redshirt freshman Joe Schaefer had seven tackles and a sack. Senior Tim Arnold had six tackles. Junior Thomas Smith, senior Terrill Mayberry and Sprenkel all had a sack. Senior Teddy Piepkow had two pass deflections.
White Defense
