Falcons Fall to Eastern Michigan, 4-1, in MAC Quarterfinals

MUNCIE, Ind. - Fourth-seeded Eastern Michigan University posted a 4-1 win over the Bowling Green State University tennis team Friday morning (April 29) at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center, ending the Falcons' 2004-05 season. The match was a quarterfinal-round contest in the Mid-American Conference Championships, hosted by Ball State University.
With the win, the Eagles improve to 9-10 in dual-match play this season, and Eastern advances to Saturday's (April 30) semifinal round. The Falcons, seeded fifth for the tournament, end with a 12-10 dual mark.
Eastern began the day by capturing the doubles point, taking a pair of 8-0 decisions at the second and third flights. In singles action, sophomore Ashley Jakupcin downed EMU's Elizabeth Syrova in straight sets at the second flight, for the Falcons' lone point. Jakupcin upped her season singles record to a team-best 23-8, and ended the year with a total of 40 total victories, also best on the Falcons.
Eastern's Victoria Domina got a win over senior Susie Schoenberger at the top flight, and the Eagles' Vanessa Frankowski defeated Falcon freshman Andrea Volle at the third flight. At flight number six, Catherina Bestahorn got a win against junior Andrea Meister.
Freshman Jenna Nussbaum won the first set over EMU's Laura Fernandez at the fifth flight, and the two were in the midst of the second set when the match was halted.
The Falcons' seasonal total of 12 wins surpassed last season's total by two. BGSU head coach Penny Dean loses three seniors -- Schoenberger, Cameron Benjamin and Laura Kokinda -- from the 2004-05 squad.
