BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -
The Bowling Green State University softball team, coming off a 3-1 road trip, is back in action with a Wednesday (April 6) home doubleheader ... the Falcons of seventh-year head coach Leigh Ross-Shaw, winners of six of the last eight games, will host Miami University in a rematch of last year's Mid-American Conference Tournament final ... first pitch of the first game is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at the BGSU Softball Field ... then, the Brown and Orange will play three doubleheaders in a three-day span, beginning with a Saturday (April 9) twinbill at Ball State ... the Falcons then step outside of league play for a Sunday (April 10) home double-dip vs. IPFW, before heading to Oakland for a Monday (April 11) date.
LEADING OFF
Falcon junior Liz Vrabel was named the MAC's Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season and the fifth time in her BGSU career ... a native of Allison Park, Pa., Vrabel earned the honor after posting a 3-1 record and a 3.18 ERA last week ... the lone loss came to #1 Michigan ... in her other three appearances on the week, Vrabel was 3-0 with a 1.87 ERA, with 28 strikeouts in 22 innings.
Vrabel tied her career high with a whopping 14 strikeouts in Sunday's (April 3) win at Northern Illinois ... Vrabel also struck out 14 hitters in a 12-inning game vs. Western Michigan last season (April 9, 2004) ... Vrabel's previous high for a seven-inning game was 12 strikeouts, set at Detroit late last season (April 29, 2004).
Natalie Armintrout had three career hits, prior to getting a pinch-hit double in last Tuesday's (March 29) second game vs. Detroit ... that began a five-game hitting streak for Armintrout, who is now hitting .462 (6-for-13) on the season ... she is now 8-for-22 (.364) all-time as a Falcon.
Sophomore Jeanine Baca went 4-for-4 in the Falcons' win at Valparaiso Monday (April 4) ... her hits total was a career high, and also set a BGSU season high ... the last time a BGSU player got four hits was on March 20, 2004 (Gina Rango vs. Georgia State).
Two of Baca's hits were triples, which is believed to tie the school record ... Crystal Wilson had a pair of triples in the 2002 season opener at Tennessee State (Feb. 22, 2002).
Baca raised her batting average by 29 points in Monday's game, from .223 to .252 ... prior to the Valpo game, she had had three hits in a game on nine occasions, including seven during her freshman year and twice this season.
The Falcons already have topped last season's totals in both triples and stolen bases ... Baca's two triples on Monday bring the team total to eight ... BGSU had six during all of last year ... the Falcons now have 31 stolen bases in 2005, after swiping 29 last year ... no Falcon had more than seven steals in 2004, but two players -- Rango (11) and sophomore Megan McPherson (nine) -- already have surpassed that total this spring.
