Falcons Begin Stretch Run, Travel to Miami
BGSU travels to Oxford, Ohio, this weekend for a Mid-American Conference series against the Miami Redhawks (May 6-8) at Stanely G. McKie Field. The Falcons sit in fourth place in the MAC West with just nine league game remaining. This will mark the second consecutive season the two teams have met during the regular season after having not met for the previous three years. BGSU took 2-of-3 from MU last season at Warren Steller Field. The last time the Falcons travelled to Oxford was March 22, 2000, when they split a doubleheader.
Danny Schmitz Records Career Win No. 400
Head Coach Danny Schmitz became the first coach in ANY SPORT at BGSU and the eighth coach in MAC history to record career victory No. 400 on April 29 in a 6-1 win vs. IPFW. Schmitz' 15-year record now stands at 402-356-4 (.530 pct.). He is third on the MAC active coaching list for career wins, behind Ohio's Joe Carbone (504) and EMU's Roger Coryell (477). Schmitz' 208 MAC wins are also third among active coaches.
BGSU's Alan Brech Breaking Batters
SO Alan Brech (Harrison, Ohio) struck out nine, one off his career-high, and held IPFW to one run in a 6-1 victory on April 29. Brech raised his record to 6-1 on the season and has allowed just three runs in his last 35.1 innings pitched, dating back to March 19. In his last five appearances, Brech has a 0.81 ERA with 34 strikeouts and eight walks. The southpaw is tops in the MAC and 30th in the nation with a 2.02 ERA in 49.0 IPP. He leads BGSU with 53 strikeouts to go along with just 15 walks. He was named MAC West Pitcher of the Week on April 18 after striking out a career-high 10 at Northern Illinois. Brech was also two outs away from a no-hitter on April 1 in a 2-0 victory vs. Central Michigan.
Eric Lawson and Josh Stewart Showering the Hits in April
SO Eric Lawson (Milford, Ohio) raised his batting average 24 points in four games vs. IPFW last weekend to .349. Lawson's season-high, nine-game hitting streak was snapped on April 30, but the second baseman has been hot as of late. He has hit safely in 12 of his last 14 games, hitting .451 during that stretch with a .491 on-base pct. For the season, Lawson has failed to reach base in just two games.
SO Josh Stewart (Dayton, Ohio) is currently riding a career-best nine-game hitting streak and has hit safely in 26 of 35 games played this season. He has failed to reach base in just four games all year. Over his last 15 games, he has hit safely in 14 with a .429 batting avg. and .467 on-base pct. during that stretch. He is second on the team with a season batting avg. of .352 while playing both the outfield and catcher.
Reimold Getting Into the Mix, As Well
JR Nolan Reimold (Greenville, Pa.) raised his batting average 18 points by going 7-for-14 in four games vs. IPFW last weekend. He ended the weekend on a high note by smacking a walk-off, solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give BGSU a 5-4 victory on April 30. The home run, his second of the weekend, was his MAC-leading 14th of the season and plated his 46th RBI of the year. He ended with seven RBIs and five runs scored in the four seven-inning games. Reimold is eighth in the nation with 0.37 home runs per game, 14th nationally with a .743 slugging pct., and 29th nationally with 1.21 RBIs per game.
Other Falcons Nationally Ranked...
Besides Brech and Reimold who are nationally ranked, SR Jeff Warnock (Cincinnati, Ohio) is ranked eighth in the country in sacrifice hits per game (0.29 pg). He has 11 sacrifice hits so far this season, one off his career-high of 12 sacrifice hits in 2004. The school record for sacrifice hits in a season is 17 by Mike Lanseer in 1977.
Out of the 283 Division I teams in the country, BGSU is among the top-50 schools in batting average (34th, .313), win-loss percentage (37th, .684), home runs per game (38th, 1.0 pg), and slugging pct. (44th, .467).
