BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Mid-American Conference office has released the 2005-06 league basketball schedules, and the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team will once again play a difficult 16-game league slate beginning in January of 2006.
The Falcons, after winning MAC regular-season and tournament championships in 2004-05, move back to the East Division for the '05-06 campaign. With the league back to 12 schools for basketball, the Falcons will play two games against each of the five other East Division schools, while facing each of the six West Division teams once apiece.
The 2005-06 academic year begins the Falcons' second stint in the East Division since the league went to a divisional format in 1997. BGSU spent five years in the East, prior to moving to the West in 2002.
BGSU will host West Division foes Eastern Michigan, Northern Illinois and Western Michigan, while hitting the road to face Ball State, Central Michigan and Toledo.
Curt Miller's Falcons will open the MAC schedule at home vs. Akron (Jan. 7), in the first of four Saturday home games in league play. The final Saturday home tilt, on Feb. 18, is a potential doubleheader date, as the BGSU men's team will host an ESPN Bracket Buster game that day.
Four days later (Feb. 22), the Falcons' final regular-season home game comes against Kent State, in a rematch of the 2005 Kraft MAC Tournament's championship game. That also will mark "Senior Night" for the Falcons, who have a pair of seniors -- Casey McDowell and Jill Lause -- on the roster.
The Falcons' home games are tentatively scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. on weekdays and 1:00 p.m. on weekends. The UB game will be an exception, as the start time of that game will not be determined until the Bracket Buster matchups and television plans have been determined.
The top-four teams in the regular season will earn byes for the first round of the league tournament, which begins on March 4. Those four teams will join the four first-round survivors in downtown Cleveland, for the quarterfinal round on March 8. The semifinals are scheduled for March 10, with the championship game the next day.
