BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University tennis team begins the 2005-06 season this weekend, hosting the BGSU Invitational. The two-day, seven-team event will be held Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 24-25) at Keefe Courts on the BGSU campus.
Keefe Courts are located off Stadium Drive, directly east of (behind) the BGSU Ice Arena and west of the Cochrane Soccer Stadium complex.
Head coach Penny Dean enters her 16th season at the BGSU helm. She and the Falcons will host a tourney field that includes Buffalo, Ferris State, Toledo, Wright State, Xavier and Youngstown State. Team scores will not be kept, but individual singles and doubles flight champions will be crowned.
Dean lost three seniors (Cameron Benjamin, Laura Kokinda and Susie Schoenberger) off of last year's squad, but welcomes back six letterwinners who are joined by three freshmen.
The 2005-06 senior class includes Andrea Meister and Heidi Romer. There are also two members of the junior and sophomore classes.
Ashley Jakupcin is back for her junior season, as is Erica Wolfe. The sophomore class is comprised of Jenna Nussbaum and Andrea Volle.
Freshman Libby Harrison (Dayton, Ohio), Kelsey Jakupcin (Dublin, Ohio) and Stephanie Menoff (Naperville, Ill.) will look to make their respective collegiate debuts this weekend. The Falcon roster features a pair of siblings this season, as Kelsey Jakupcin is the younger sister of Ashley.
The scheduled format for this year's BGSU Invitational includes six singles and three doubles flights, with an eight-player draw in each flight. Each singles player/doubles team will play three matches. Action is scheduled to begin at approximately 9:00 a.m. each day.
