GREEN BAY, Wisc. - Despite freshman keeper Paul Shoemaker's two saves, the Bowling Green State University men's soccer team fell to Sacred Heart University, 1-0 as they opened the 2005 season at the UW- Green Bay Nike Tournament.
"It was good for us to open with Sacred Heart," said coach Fred Thompson. "We were on a level playing field since they are also a new team as far as young players and a first year coach. We played well, but we are still trying to adjust to college level soccer. Right now we are off just a bit"
Sacred Heart took the lead on a Jason Tessitore goal at 60:54 despite a Pioneer red card infraction late in the first half leaving Sacred Heart to just 10 players for the remainder of the game.
The Falcons out shot the Pioneers 17-12 but could not overcome Sacred Heart's Matthew Jones' six saves.
Thompson is looking forward to putting this game on the back burner and is now focused on tomorrow's opponent, Eastern Illinois, which lost to host UW- Green Bay today, 3-1.
Last time the Falcons saw the 4-3-3 style of play the Panthers will bring they beat the University of Michigan in the pre-season, 2-0.
The Falcons will take on the Panthers tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. in conclusion of the Nike Tournament.
