FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Senior Julie Trundle's goal with just over six minutes left in the second half lifted the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over host Northern Arizona University. The non-conference match was part of opening-day action at the La Quinta Inn & Suites Mountain Classic at NAU's Lumberjack Stadium.
The win ups the Falcons' 2005 record to 1-2, while the host Lumberjacks drop to 0-3 on the year.
NAU got on the scoreboard first, as Stefanie Smith headed home a Karla Lee crossing ball at the 20:44 mark. With exactly 35 minutes elapsed, however, Falcon freshman Kristin McDonald scored her first collegiate goal to send the teams to halftime tied, 1-1. Senior Leah Eggleton, BGSU's assist leader in 2004, had an assist on McDonald's goal.
Trundle's goal, the only scoring of the second half, came at the 83:41 mark. After an NAU foul, BGSU had a free kick just outside of the penalty box. Trundle took the kick, and bent a shot into the far upper corner of the goal, out of the reach of goalkeeper Andrea Berra.
Senior Ali Shingler made seven saves to pick up the complete-match win, while Berra had two stops on the night for the host school.
NAU outshot the Falcons by a 15-8 count, and the Lumberjacks had an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal.
"It was a much better performance today," said BGSU head coach Andy Richards. "We really competed well against Northern Arizona -- we competed at a much higher level than we did last weekend.
"A come-from-behind victory is always pleasing, and it gives a good sense of character about the team. We progressively played better and better as the game went along.
"It was great to see Kristin get her first collegiate goal, and it was a superb individual effort from Julie with her free kick to win the game for us. I was very pleased with the way the team played overall, and I was proud of the efforts of everyone involved."
The Falcons remain in Flagstaff to prepare for Sunday's (Sept. 4) match vs. Boise State University. BSU is 1-1 on the young season, after opening the La Quinta tourney with a 1-0 win over UC Davis.
