GREEN BAY, Wisc. - After two grueling days of back-to-back games, the Bowling Green State University men's soccer team finished the day with a 1-1 tie against Eastern Illinois University to close out the UW-Green Bay Nike Tournament.
"I felt we controlled the game and created more chances with the ball," said head coach Fred Thompson. "The freshman played well which is not easy to do if you are not used to the collegiate pace."
The Falcons, which started six newcomers, including one in goal, struck first when senior Omari Aldridge found freshman George Davis after receiving a wide pass from Justin Kim at midfield. Davis' first collegiate goal came at 17:44.
The Falcons held the lead until 52:13 when EIU's Brad Earl scored on a give and go from Dustin Weiher. At the end of regulation play and two overtimes, neither team was able to find the back of the net again.
"Eastern positioned themselves well in both overtimes. At that time there were two very tired teams on the field, but we stayed mentally tough," said Thompson. "Our effort was fantastic throughout the weekend."
Freshman Paul Shoemaker led all keepers with 11 saves for the day, including one in each overtime.
The Falcons will travel to Dayton, Friday, Sept. 9, to take on the Wright State Raiders for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
