FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Senior Samantha Meister's first-half goal proved to be all the scoring the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team would need Sunday afternoon (Sept. 4), as the Falcons picked up a 1-0 win over Boise State University. The neutral-site match was held at Lumberjack Stadium.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 2-2 on the season, and BG completed a 2-0 weekend at the La Quinta Inn & Suites Mountain Classic, hosted by Northern Arizona University. BGSU had opened the tourney with a 2-1 win over NAU Friday (Sept. 2). Boise State dropped to 1-2 on the year.
On Sunday, Meister's goal, her team-leading second of the season, came off an assist by classmate Julie Trundle at the 18:36 mark of the opening half. Another senior, goalkeeper Ali Shingler, made that goal hold up, as she pitched her first shutout of the season. Shingler had seven saves in the match.
Trundle, who scored the winning goal in Friday's win, was named the tournament's offensive MVP, while Shingler was named the tourney's most valuable goalkeeper.
The only goal the Falcons would need came when Trundle played a through-ball to Meister, who ran onto the ball and had a breakaway against BSU starting goalie Kim Parker. Parker charged out of her net to contest the shot, but Meister deposited the ball just inside the near post.
"We got a great performance from the team again today," said BGSU head coach Andy Richards. "In terms of our work ethic and our competitive nature, we are light years ahead of where we were last weekend.
"We still have a lot of things to work on, but certainly, our competitive level was much better than it has been. Northern Arizona and Boise State both are very good programs, and we are very happy to have played very well, and to come away with two wins."
BGSU returns to the Midwest with a Friday (Sept. 9) match at Michigan State. The Falcons then will return to Cochrane Field with next Sunday's (Sept. 11) contest vs. Eastern Illinois.
