Bowling Green, Ohio - The following are some post game notes following BGSU's 75-74 loss at home against Northern Illinois. The Huskies now lead the series, 24-23.
BGSU lost for just the fourth time in 26 games when it has had to play defense with a one or two-point lead since the 2001-02 season.
The Falcons had won their last six games decided by one point since the 2001-02 season. Their last one-point defeat came in January of 2002 in an 87-86 overtime game at Akron.
The Falcons opened the game with a 10-1 run.
BGSU hit 12 of its first 14 shots.
The 50 points scored by BGSU in the first half was a season-high for a 20-minute period (46 vs. Notre Dame). Last year, the Falcons scored 52 against Ohio on February 7, 2005.
BGSU's 16 field goal and eight three-pointers in the half also was a season-best. The 72.7% effort in the first half was a season-high and the Falcons also made all 10 of its free throws.
BGSU had a season-high five blocked shots.
BG shot a season best .575 (23-40) from the floor.
BG shot a season best .579 (11-19) from three point range.
The Falcons committed a season-low 10 turnovers.
BGSU led 62-47 with 13:10 remaining.
Junior Martin Samarco had a team-high 25 points, the ninth time he has led the Falcons in scoring. He also made six of eight three-pointers. His three-pointer with 1:46 left gave BGSU a 74-73 lead after the Falcons had fallen behind 73-69 with 2:34 to go on a three-pointer by Todd Peterson of NIU.
Samarco is shooting 50% from three-point range (9/18) in MAC games.
Junior Matt Lefeld had a career-high 19 points and three blocks. His six field goals made, seven free throw attempts and 36 minutes are career-bests.
The 44 combined points by Samarco and Lefeld is the most by a Falcons tandem this year.
Senior Steven Wright had 12 points off the bench. He also made a season-high four free throws.
Junior John Floyd had eight points and four assists. He also made two of four three-pointers and is shooting 50% (7/14) from long range in the MAC.
Senior Mawel Soler had five assists.
