BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Head coach Scott Sehmann and the members of the women's track and field team will open their 2006 season with the BGSU Invitational on Saturday. The Falcons will host Western Michigan and Miami in a conference matchup.
The team, after finishing 10th at last year's Outdoor Mid-American Conference Championships, lost several key seniors, one being their standout thrower, Kerri McClung, but did return several freshman and sophomores who made up over 75 percent of the team's points at the conference championships.
The Falcons have a rich class of juniors and sophomores who will continue to succeed during the 2006 as well as several freshman who look to impact the squad.
Jessica White, the current school record holder in the 60-meter dash, was one of the top sprinters for the Falcons in 2005 and looks to be the top sprinter in 2006.
Cross country standout Jamie Roflow made a splash at last year's conference championships, with a fourth place finish in the steeplechase and a seventh place finish in the 5,000-meter run. She had a successful fall, and hopes to carry that momentum to the indoor and outdoor season.
The top jumper for the Falcons, horizontally and vertically, will be junior Erica Wilson. She has been the top high jumper for the past two years and one of the top long jumpers. She has placed fifth at the conference championships indoors for the past two years and hopes to better that mark with the 2006 MAC Championships being held at BGSU's own Perry Field House.
After the loss of the thrower's Kerri McClung, it may have been hard to pick up the pieces she so carefully crafted over the past five years, but a slew of sophomores and juniors look to do so. One such sophomore is Whitney Hartman, a Bowling Green native, who, under the direction of Sehmann, placed sixth in the discus throw at the outdoor championships and had her career-best throw in the hammer throw at the outdoor meet, with 161-00.00, placing her fourth in BGSU history. Hartman looks to carry the momentum into the 2006 season in the shotput and weight throw.
The meet will be held in Perry Field House on Saturday, January 14, 2006 and will begin at 11:00 a.m. with the field events.
