Bowling Green State University junior guard Ryne Hamblet is a Chicago native who comes to BGSU after two seasons at Chipola JC in Florida. He is expected to have an immediate impact for the Falcons who host a free exhibition game against Capital at 7 p.m., Wednesday, November 8.
"Ryne is a kid who is a really talented basketball player. He has every skill, he is long, athletic and he can shoot the ball. He can make shots at midrange and he is a kid that I think has a real chance, if he does the tough things, to be an outstanding player."
Q and A with Ryne Hamblet
How has the transition gone for you after playing at a junior college?
"Coach Dakich is bringing me along slowly but surely and I am getting a better feel for the offense each day. It can be hard to make the transition but for me it has been a good one. I think I can really help this team."
At Chiploa, you played with a number of Division I prospects, has that made your transition easier?
We were the top team in our conference and our conference was the number one conference in the nation so there was a lot of Division I players and a lot of good competition every day. I think that has definitely helped me."
What is the strength of your game?
"I feel the strength of my game is that I am an unselfish point guard. A lot of players like to look for out for themselves and shoot, I like to pass and I am happier when I get an assist."
How well do you defend?
"I take a lot of pride on defense, nobody likes to get scored on during a game. Coach Dakich is teaching me each day about defensive ball pressure and that is new for me. I'm excited about the challenge to get better.
What are you studying?
"I am taking classes in liberal studies. Someday I would like to be a coach or even be a teacher."
Did you get your first name from a former Chicago Cubs great?
"My dad, my mom, and my older brother, Tracy Green, are all big Cub fans. My brother was a big Andre Dawson and Ryne Sanberg fan, and when I was born he was 10 years-old and he named me after Ryne Sandberg."
Did you ever get to watch him play?
"As I was growing up he was ending his career, so my brother told me about him all of the time"
Do you and Coach Dakich share any of your frustrations as Cubs fans?
"We talk about the Cubs all of the time and are trying to wait for them to turn it around so they can make a run for the World Series again."
