BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University volleyball team improved to their record to 23-3 and 12-1 in the conference with a 3-0 sweep at Miami Wednesday night. Junior Madeline Means paced the Falcons with 12 kills while Sophomore Kendra Halm compiled eight blocks.
Points were tough to come by as the Falcons struggled with a .185 hitting percentage. Bowling excelled on the defensive side of the net, however, to secure the victory.
"Tonight we could not get going, our passing was very inconsistent throughout the night," said Head Coach Denise Van De Walle. "Offensively, we were just as inconsistent with too many errors."
"The bright spot on the night is we won in three games and we blocked and served the ball very well."
Van De Walle elected to take a timeout trailing 15-12 in game one. The decision proved to be beneficial to the Brown and Orange as they stormed out to a seven-point run after the break in action. A block by Juniors Stephanie Swiger and Corrie Mills capped off the Falcon run, forcing the RedHawks to take a timeout of their own.
Miami counterpunched following the timeout as well, trimming their deficit to a lone point at 20-19. A sense of déjà vu must have set in then though as they witnessed Bowling Green string together another seven point run. Bowling Green finished off the game with a 30-21 win.
Game two began with an 11-11 stalemate before Bowling Green's offense kicked into high gear for a 30-18 win. BGSU hit a match-high .333 in the second game. Sophomore Elizabeth Simon served out the final six points of the game.
"I would like to compliment the play of Elizabeth Simon, I thought she was steady throughout the unsteadiness around her," said Van De Walle.
Game three had a bizarre beginning. Miami was penalized for a delay after remaining in the locker room for too long, giving the Falcons a 2-0 handicap to start the third game. The RedHawks would not go away quietly, knotting the score as late as 29-29 before a pair of errors handed BGSU a 31-29 win in the clincher.
"We were just excited to get out with a win and get back on the bus," said Van De Walle. "We know that we have a tough Western Michigan team coming in on Saturday and we will play better."
As mentioned, the Falcons are next in action this Saturday inside Anderson Arena against Western Michigan. The match is scheduled to begin at 3 PM.
