Baca, Zirkle and Wiemer Named 2006-07 Softball Captains

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Seniors Jeanine Baca and Ashley Zirkle and sophomore Hayley Wiemer have been named the 2006-07 Falcon softball captains, head coach Shannon Salsburg has announced. The trio was elected by a team vote.
"The three combine for a good mix in terms of personality and the intangibles they bring to the team both on and off the field," said Salsburg.

Baca, a La Habra, CA native, has played in a team high 182 career games, making starts in the outfield in all but one. Last season Baca hit .245 and registered a team-high 13 stolen bases and 26 runs scored. As a Falcon, she has stolen 25 bases on 31 attempts and has scored 93 runs with seven coming as homeruns. In 2006, the then junior was named to the Compass Bank Invitational All-Tournament team.
Zirkle, a senior hailing from Gahanna, Ohio, has posted a .213 batting average in three complete seasons with the Falcons and has seen action in 87 games and has made 64 starts in the Orange and Brown. In 202 career at bats, she has blasted eight homeruns on 43 hits. In 2005, Zirkle batted .253 while knocking six out of the ballpark. Additionally her batting skills scored 23 RBIs. She was named the MAC Player of the Week for the week of April 17.
The youngest of the trio, Wiemer, is a right-handed pitcher/designated player from Sylvania, Ohio. At last season's MAC tournament she saw 9.1 innings of pitching action and the then-rookie posted a 1.50 ERA in two appearances on the mound. Wiemer did not allow a batter to record a double or triple from the plate during MAC Tournament play.

Lauren Hoffman, Emily Gouge, Brittnay Hay and Sharon Palma were also chosen to serve as class representatives - the four student-athletes will be involved in decision-making situations involving their class and the team.
Opening day has been set for the Falcons as February 23, 2007. The squad will travel to Chattanooga, Tenn., for a three-day tournament hosted by the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
