BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Post-game quotes after the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team picked up an 86-67 win over Temple University Friday night at Anderson Arena ...
BGSU HEAD COACH Curt Miller
"That was a great win over a very good Temple team in front of a great crowd. We were just terrific offensively all night long. It was the best game, in terms of shot selection, that we have had this year. In our offense, the kids have the freedom to take quick shots, but tonight I thought we really worked and executed the high ball-screen to get quality shots throughout the game."
"Our floor general, Kate Achter, was incredible tonight. She had a picture-perfect game. She was terrific in the way she ran the team; she got penetration that was needed for the offense to work, and we just fed off of her all night. Between Kate and Jasmine McCall, we had a 2-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio, against some of the most athletic guards that they will play against all year."
"You could see that Temple wanted to make Kate make shots tonight. It didn't take long to see that that was the game plan, and for the most part, Kate has risen to those types of occasions in her career. When teams roll that kind of a game plan out against her, she usually comes up big, and again, she was terrific tonight."
"The ability to get a lead in the first half, with Liz Honegger and Carin Horne each on the bench with two fouls, just gave us so much confidence at halftime. Without two superstars, we were able to build a double-digit lead. If there is a defensive stopper on our team, someone who takes pride in that role, it is Lindsey Goldsberry. We knew that if Carin got in foul trouble against Kamesha Hairston, who is a tremendous player, that we could put Goldsberry on her. And, in the first half, after a quick six points from Kamesha, I think we held her scoreless for the last 15 minutes. That was huge, because she could have had a monster game and really hurt us, but we were able to contain her, and a lot of the credit for that goes to Lindsey Goldsberry."
(On Amber Flynn's three-point shooting night)
"Well, she has always been capable (of making 3s), and she has stretches in practice where she shoots the ball very well. But, she is so good off the dribble that we don't like her to settle for those 3s. Tonight, though, that's what they gave her, and to her credit she stepped up. Her play off the bench, with Liz in foul trouble, really gave us a lift. She will take more charges than anyone else in the program, and she is a very good offensive player. I think she is the most valuable sixth man in this conference."
(On Ali Mann's playing all 40 minutes tonight)
"I need to work to get her more breaks, especially around the media timeouts. But, she is such a calming influence on a hyper coach that it really helps me to have her out there."
(On being 38-5 over the last 43 games, and increasing the home winning streak)
"I am proud of how far this program has come, and I am also proud that we set the tone early that Anderson Arena is going to be a difficult place for people to come beat us."
JUNIOR GUARD Kate Achter
(Should there be a rule that the team eats at your house the day before every game [as they did yesterday]?)
"If we can play like that after eating at my house before every game, then yes."
(On her 8-of-8 shooting)
"We knew that, if they were going to double Ali and Liz, I was going to have to slash to the basket or make a couple of outside jump shots, and I was able to do that tonight."
(On Amber Flynn's two three-pointers vs. Temple)
"It's pretty awesome. Amber and I joke all the time, because I have never made a 3 in my college career. And when Amber made her first 3 last year, the assist was from me. So, we share a special bond over our three-point shooting. But, it was great to see her step up, make some 3s and be a threat out there tonight; that really helped to open up their defense."
SOPHOMORE GUARD Lindsey Goldsberry
"Coming into the game, Coach mentioned that they might need me to be a defensive stopper tonight. When they put me in, I just tried to go out there, play hard and do what I've grown up doing."
(What was it that went so well for BGSU during the run late in the first half?)
"I think we were just playing together. That is something that we pride ourselves on, playing together at both ends of the court. We really stepped up and came together during that stretch."
TEMPLE HEAD COACH DAWN STALEY
(What happened during those last six minutes of the first half when BG made their run?)
"I think our game plan unfolded. Kate came out and got hot -- we actually wanted the ball in her hands, and we wanted her to shoot a little bit more than normal. She squashed all of it; everything fed off of her."
"You want to pick your poison, and make people play out of their roles. But, Kate made up for her role and somebody else's. She took over the basketball game, and when she has it going on like that, there's not much you can do."
(Where does this Bowling Green team rank among the teams you will face this season?)
"They are potent offensively. And, the way they do it -- I don't think we are going to see a team as accurate as they are. They are just balanced everywhere, and they make you pay. There are lot a lot of teams that have a savvy point guard like they do."
