BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Three UNO goals in both the second and third period doomed the Bowling Green State University hockey team, as they dropped a 7-1 decision Saturday night inside the BG Ice Arena to the University at Omaha Mavericks. In the loss junior Derek Whitmore recorded his 10th goal of the season.
"It was a game that we had to do a lot of things to stay close early on," said BGSU head coach. "Once they got their goals in the second it really put us back on our heels. We didn't handle their skill well. They had a feeding frenzy as the game went on capitalizing on mistakes. They came hard like good offensive teams will and they didn't make a lot of mistakes out there. I thought we needed to play a perfect game tonight and we weren't obviously close to that."
The reigning Central Collegiate Hockey Association Player of the Year, Scott Parse, scored three of UNO's first four goals, with his second coming with the man advantage. Brent Kisio added a pair of tallies, while Tomas Klempa scored his sixth goal of the year. Parse had five points on the night.
As mentioned before Whitmore recorded his 10th goal of the year, with just seven seconds remaining in the opening period, to tie the score at one apiece. Sophomore Brandon Svendsen passed the puck out high to fellow classmate Kevin Schmidt. The Markham, Ontario native wristed a shot toward goal, which Whitmore deflected past UNO's Jerad Kaufman.
Freshman Eddie Neville made 38 saves, despite the 7-1 deficit, including a handful of stops in the second period, causing the crowd to chant, "Eddie, Eddie, Eddie."
Despite the lop-sided score, the Falcons continued to battle, highlighted by freshman Kai Kantola. Kantola, who dove to the ice to block a Nebraska-Omaha shot, which caught him in the shoulder, but he refused to leave the ice. While on the same shift, and the previous shot still bothering him, Kantola once again went down to the ice to block a second UNO shot.
On the night the Mavs were 1-for-7 with the man advantage, while the Falcons were 1-for-3.
Up next for the Orange and Brown is a trip to Fairbanks, Alaska, for a two game series with the Nanooks on Dec. 8-9. Both games will start at 11:05 and will be carried live on 88.1 FM.
