BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Mid-American Conference announced its 2006 Academic All-MAC team Friday, as voted by faculty athletic representatives at MAC institutions. Bowling Green placed a league-high six players on this year's team. The number of honorees on the Academic All-MAC team are the number that is set for the specific sport or 33% of the number of nominees, whichever is greater.
Ten of this year's academic team honorees were selected to all-conference teams as well by the league's head coaches, including Bowling Green's Chrissy Gothke, Kendra Halm, Madeline Means and Stephanie Swiger. Juniors Maggie Karges and Corrie Mills joined the above as members of the academic team.
"This is the icing on the cake for us," said Head Coach Denise Van De Walle. "We've had a great season in so many ways. Our team chemistry is awesome, a 26-6 record, MAC Runners Up, several All-MAC honors, and an All-Region honor. Now we get six players on the Academic All-MAC team and lead the conference in that area. It speaks volumes about the type of volleyball player we have at BG. We really do have the complete package. I am so proud of what we do here."
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for a particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
