AKRON, Ohio - Quoting several members of the Bowling Green State University women's basketball program after Wednesday night's (Feb. 15) 80-48 win at the University of Akron ...
FRESHMAN GUARD Lindsey Goldsberry
"In practice, we have a White team and an Orange team, and we're always battling against one another. It helps our team get better. At the end of the game, it was the White team out there, and we just tried to play like we do in practice, going at it and executing plays."
SENIOR CENTER Jill Lause
"We've been playing as second-half team lately, and not so much as a first-half team. Our main focus was on playing a strong game - not just 20 minutes or 30 minutes, but the whole 40 minutes. We've just got to take it one game at a time."
"As players, we are all very, very competitive. We all play hard in practice, because we are all fighting for playing time, and working hard to make our entire team better. It was nice for the non-starters to give the starters a break tonight, and it was great to see them as excited for us as we are for them when we play."
"Carin Horne really stepped it up for us tonight. She has struggled in the first half of a few recent games, before coming out and playing strong in the second half. Tonight, she played well in both the first half and the second half, and that really gave us a spark."
JUNIOR CENTER Liz Honegger
"We are happy to be in the rankings, but we don't want to come out and get a loss, because we know we would be back out of the rankings, just like that. It's kind of cool (to be ranked), and we could tell people that we are on the (ESPN) ticker. But, when it's all said and done, being 25th in the nation is not really that big of a deal - we've still got to win games."
HEAD COACH Curt Miller
(Opening statement)
"It was a great team win tonight. I'm really excited that we got to play all 12 people, and we got contributions from everyone. I thought we set the tempo and the stage for the game in the first half with our pressure defense, forcing them into 18 first-half turnovers. I think that was the difference in the game. It enabled us to get a lead, and when you get a lead like that, you can play loose. I'm very excited about the team win, and about how well our players off the bench executed."
(On the play of the BG bench)
"Our bench doesn't get the recognition that they deserve. They are really talented players, and they play their guts out in practice. At times, they execute much more efficiently than our Orange team (starters). They execute tremendously well in practice, and tonight was an opportunity to showcase that, and to show people how well that second unit can execute. One through 12, we win and lose as a team, and I'm pleased that the bench players got to show how good they can be when they get extended minutes."
(Are you and your team thinking at all about an undefeated conference season?)
"We really aren't. Our number-one goal is to win an East Division title, and we have a three-game lead with four games to go. We face Buffalo on Saturday, and it is a great opportunity for us to draw a big crowd, with the doubleheader with the men's team. If we can beat Buffalo, we can have a three-game lead with three to go, and we can control our own destiny. The polls and the records take care of themselves if you do what you are supposed to do on game night for two hours. We are going to stick with the focus that we have had all year, taking it game by game. If you do that, all of those other things take care of themselves. Our only goal right now is to win the MAC East, and that's all we talk about."
(Did you talk at all about being in the national polls?)
"The only mention of the poll, over the last day, was that we have to go prove to everyone that we deserve to be there. To get a big road win over an Akron team that I really respect - they don't ever quit, and they just play their hearts out - was a good statement."
"I can't stress enough that we are really looking forward to Saturday. We are honored to play doubleheaders. We really love them, we're big supporters of the men's team, and I think they like doubleheaders, too. We're looking forward to a good crowd, as our community has many good supporters of both teams, and we're excited to be the opening game of the big weekend doubleheader."
