BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University hockey team fell 2-1 Thursday evening to the RedHawks of Miami on senior night. Senior Mike Falk was the Falcons lone goal scorer, posting his 13th of the season, while fellow classmate Jon Horrell recorded 28 saves in the loss.
"It's another hard loss there is no question about it," said BGSU head coach Scott Paluch. "As difficult as it has been down the stretch here I believe that we have taken some steps here to become a pretty good playoff team. I know that might sound a little crazy, but I think we have made some strides here in the last couple games and I think we are playing much better defensively."
Miami (22-7-4, 19-6-2) got on the scoreboard first with an even strength goal at the 8:23 mark of the first after Ryan Jones recorded his 17th goal of the year.
Jones got his second of the game late in the second period for the RedHawks lone power-play goal of the night. Miami finished the night just 1-for-8 with the man advantage.
Miami out-shot Bowling Green 24-13 in the first 40 minutes.
That's when the Falcons came roaring back. Recording six shots in the first three minutes of the third period, Bowling Green's offense looked to be hitting on all cylinders. Miami's Charlie Effinger was up to the task, stopping all but one of the Falcons' shots all night.
BGSU (13-20-2, 8-17-2) continued to pour the shots on the MU goal and finally snuck one past Effinger at the 5:08 mark of the third. With the Falcons on the power play, sophomore Jonathan Matsumoto got open at the right circle, faked a shot and slid it over to Falk, who was park in the center of the left circle. His one-timer was a perfect shot in the upper-left hand corner of the goal to get the Falcons within one.
The Falcons pulled Jon Horrell for the final 1:10 and managed to get four more shots on the Miami net, but could not convert.
For the night Miami was 1-for-8 on the power play, while BGSU was 1-for-10. Effinger recorded 24 saves on the night, with Horrell picking up 28 saves in the loss.
"He (Horrell) was really good," said Paluch. "There were a couple games where he just had some numbers going against him, I thought tonight he battled extremely hard and kept the game right where we could have a chance."
These same two teams will do it again on Saturday night, this time in Oxford, Ohio. The contest will be the final regular season game inside the Goggin Ice Arena. Opening face-off is 7:35.
