Guyer Named MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week

CLEVELAND, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Bowling Green State University senior Jessica Guyer has been named the Mid-American Conference's Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week. The announcement was made by the league office on Thursday afternoon (Feb. 23).
Guyer, a senior from Columbus, Ohio (Worthington Kilbourne H.S.), led the Falcons in several events in Sunday's 190.100 - 187.325 loss at Western Michigan. She won the floor exercise for the third time this season, with a score of 9.825.
Additionally, Guyer had a season-best score of 9.775 on the vault, finishing second in that event.
Guyer, a team co-captain, has a perfect 4.00 cumulative grade point average as a biology (pre-med) major.
The MAC Scholar-Athlete-of-the-Week award is presented to one male and one female student-athlete each week. Nominees must have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher, have been at their school for at leaset one year and have performed well during the previous week's competition.

Guyer (all-around, Sr., 4.00, biology/pre-med, Columbus, Ohio) led the Falcons in several events in Sunday's 190.100 - 187.325 loss at Western Michigan. Epkey (Sr., 3.750, religious studies, Greenwood, Ind.) helped the 69th-ranked BSU men's tennis squad secure wins over two ranked Big Ten opponents this weekend. In Friday's victory over No. 71 Purdue, Epkey teamed with brother Jarrod at the No. 2 spot to secure the doubles point in a 9-7 win over Kelubia Mabatah and Griffin Nienberg. In Sunday's win over No. 60 Indiana, Epkey landed a straight-set 6-3, 6-4 decision over Dara McLoughlin at the No. 3 singles position. Additionally, he paired with brother Jarrod once again, to easily slide past the Hoosiers' Peter Antons and David Bubenicek 8-3 at the No. 2 slot.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
Female Nominees:
Akron: Jennie Castle (track and field, middle distance, Sr., 3.77, mass media/communications, Barnesville, Ohio) won the 800 meters in a field house record and NCAA provisional qualifying time of 2:08.14 at Saturday's Zips Open. The senior, whose eligibility ends this indoor season, was making her last appearance at a home meet. She already owns the top mark in the league this season (2:07.03) and ranks fifth in the mile.
Ball State: Kelsey Corbin (basketball, guard, Jr., 3.69, psychology, Fort Wayne, Ind.) averaged 12.0 points, 6.0 assists and 5.5 rebounds as Ball State posted key Mid-American Conference wins over Toledo (64-49) and Western Michigan (62-55). The wins helped the Cardinals move within one game of second place in the West Division. In the win over Toledo, Corbin tallied 16 points on a 6-of-7 performance from the floor and 4-of-5 showing from the free throw line. She was perfect from the field until missing a shot attempt late in the game. In addition to her 11th double-figure scoring effort of the season, Corbin had five assists, four rebounds and one assists in 31 minutes of work. In the win over Western Michigan, she dished off a game-high seven assists, tied for team-high honors with seven rebounds plus added eight points and two steals over 32 minutes. For the week, Corbin converted 88.9 (8-of-9) percent of her free throws and 57 (8-of-14) percent of her field goal tries.
Buffalo: Viorica Badinici (basketball, forward, Jr., 3.104, psychology, Turku, Finland) became the first player to hit a game-winning shot in the final five seconds at home since the 1999 season as her 17-foot jumper gave the Bulls a 62-61 victory over Miami. Badinici scored a season-high 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting in the game, including five in the final minutes to propel the Bulls. The sophomore forward averaged four rebounds during the week as she gave the Bulls a nice spark off the bench.
Central Michigan: Danielle Espinoza (gymnastics, balance beam/floor exercise, So., 3.02, undecided, Rossford, Ohio) won two events and helped lead CMU to a conference dual meet victory over Ball State this weekend. She posted a career-best score of 9.875 on the floor exercise to capture that event and added a 9.800 on the balance beam, which tied her career-high on that event.
Eastern Michigan: Sarah VanMetre (basketball, Jr., 3.96, journalism, Noblesville, Ind.) led Eastern Michigan University to two road victories this week, as the Eagles clinched a share of the MAC-West Division title with a 12-1 conference record. In the 63-37 triumph over Northern Illinois, VanMetre scored 15 points, grabbed five rebounds and had one assist. She also excelled defensively with one block and three steals. In EMU's 73-49 victory over Toledo, VanMetre scored 12 points, had four rebounds, one assist and one blocked shot. For the two games, Van Metre averaged 13.5 points and 4.5 rebounds.
Toledo: Erica Singer (softball, outfield, Jr., 3.137, exercise science, Ney, Ohio) registered a .556 batting average with five hits in nine at-bats in the Rockets' season-opening weekend at the UNC Triangle Classic. Toledo posted a win over Minnesota and dropped decisions to North Carolina and the Golden Gophers. Singer led the Rockets to their win with a 3-for-4 effort to go along with two RBI.
Male Nominees:
Bowling Green: Matt Lefeld (basketball, center, Jr., 3.96, purchasing & supply management, Coldwater, Ohio) averaged 4.0 points and 1.5 rebounds in the Falcons' two games last week. He had four points and two rebounds in the game at Akron. Lefeld also scored four points versus Wright State, adding one rebound.
Buffalo: Dan McKenna (track & field, distance, Jr., 3.097, media studies, Liverpool, N.Y.) set the men's 3,000-meter record with his victory in the event at the Zips Open. McKenna, racing in the event for the first time this season, posted an 8:29.65 clocking to break Todd Ludden's 2004 mark by three seconds. McKenna broke his own men's mile record earlier in the season.
Central Michigan: Andrew Manning (track and field, 3,000 meters, So., 3.54, mechanical engineering, Traverse City, Mich.) won the 3,000 meters at the Jack Skoog Open on Friday night, posting a time of 8:43.82, nearly eight seconds faster than his previous best in that event this season. It was Manning's first individual event win in his career as a Chippewa.
