BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Bowling Green State University softball team scored three times in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie, and the Falcons went on to a 4-2 win over Campbell University Friday afternoon (March 10). The game, BGSU's second in the the Worth Classic, was held at the FAU Softball Stadium.
With the win, BGSU improved to 9-5 on the season, and the Falcons capped a 2-0 Friday. The Camels drop to 16-10 on the year to date.
The Falcons got on the board first, with a run in the second inning. Freshman Hayley Wiemer, BGSU's starting pitcher, helped her own cause by drawing a leadoff walk against her counterpart, Kelly Weaver. Senior Lindsay Heimrich followed with a sacrifice bunt, but both runners were safe as Wiemer beat the throw to second. Sophomore Dawnjene DeLong executed a sac bunt of her own, and was retired at first, but both runners moved into scoring position. From there, junior Lauren Hoffman singled to right-center field, plating Wiemer with the game's first run.
The score remained 1-0 until the top of the sixth, when the Camels tied matters. An infield single and a hit batter put a pair of runners on base, and Krysten Vlacancich singled up the middle to score Ashley Marley. With two runners on and none out, however, Wiemer responded by getting a fly-ball out, a foul pop and a grounder to retire the side.
In the bottom of the inning, however, the Falcons would bat around. Again, BG began what would prove to be a productive inning with a base on balls, as sophomore Allison Vallas worked Weaver for a free pass. Junior Kari Steigerwald was inserted into the game as a pinch-runner and promptly stole second, before Wiemer doubled to right, with Steigerwald taking third.
The Camels replaced Weaver with Lauren Caviness, and Heimrich drew a walk to load the bases. Caviness got a popup for the first out, but Hoffman crossed up the CU defense by bunting, and all runners were safe as Steigerwald crossed the plate.
Then, Desiree Miller drew yet another BG walk, with Wiemer scoring, and junior Jeanine Baca singled up the middle to bring Heimrich home and give the Brown and Orange a three-run lead.
The Camels got a run back in the bottom of the inning, on a single and a pair of BG errors, but Wiemer would allow no further damage. The Falcon freshman allowed just one earned run and five hits in her complete-game win, walking one batter and striking out eight. Wiemer improved to 3-1 on the year.
Weaver took the loss for CU, dropping to 7-4. She gave up three runs and five hits in five-plus innings. Caviness surrendered a run and a pair of hits in recording the last three BG outs.
At the plate, Hoffman went 2-for-3 to pace BGSU's seven-hit attack. The BG junior had the first two-hit game as well as the first multiple-RBI game of her Falcon career.
Senior Gina Rango had a pair of hits in four at-bats, while Wiemer was 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored.
Falcon batters drew four walks in the game, with three of those baserunners coming around to score and the fourth driving in a run.
Five different players had one hit apiece for the Camels.
The Falcons return to action with a pair of Saturday (March 11) games at the Worth Classic, meeting Rutgers at 1:00 p.m. before facing host Florida Atlantic in a 6:00 p.m. start.
