BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - On senior night, the Bowling Green State University gymnastics team returned home after five weeks on the road, hoping to end the season with a Mid American Conference win. While the on the road the Falcons struggled to find themselves, as week in and week out they improved but still fell short of a win. Tonight however the Orange and Brown left it all on the mats, as they pulled it together to clip the Eagles of Eastern Michigan University 191.850-191.025. Senior co-captain Jessica Guyer, who placed fourth on vault and first on floor led the Falcons.
The Falcons flew out of the starting blocks as they built a 48.150-47.050 lead. Guyer landed a 9.700 to finish fourth, while Allison Swafford stuck a 9.650 to nab fifth. The team thought they were building momentum going into the bars, the event that has been a struggling battle so far this year.
Sophomore transfer Ashlee deLeeuw has been fighting with the bars ever since her arrival on campus. Last week she stepped up and landed a 9.650. Tonight she knew the bar was set high by her senior teammates, and she answered the call as she stuck her landing scoring a 9.675, a season and career best. Deleeuw would also go on to win the event a first for her on the season. Following her lead senior co-captain Jessica Bradley and sophomore Jholeen Ponce tied for third with a mark of 9.625. The Eagles would however close the gap to .275 heading into the third event.
The beam gave the Orange and Brown a scare as a few girls struggled to find their feet. However, Bethany Kenel came through again in a clutch situation as she landed a solid routine giving her a 9.725 and a first place finish. Ponce (9.600) and Bradley (9.500) would again work together, as they took fourth and sixth respectively. The Falcons saw the momentum starting to shift their way as they headed onto the floor.
Guyer again showed why she is a co-captain as she tumbled her way to the best performance on the season a 9.850 to capture a first place slot. Erin Coudriet also came to shine as she preformed a stellar 9.775 also a season best. Allison Swafford brought a bit of Tennessee into her routine as she danced her way to a 9.725, tying her season best. Together the Falcons had five girls score better then 9.700 or better on floor, which was enough to boost the Orange and Brown to a victory over the Eagles.
Next week the team hopes to keep the scores rolling as they travel to Western Michigan for the MAC Championships. The meet is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday March 25 on Western's campus in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
