BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Despite holding a lead after five innings, Bowling Green dropped a 7-4 decision to the Wolverines. The Falcons were looking for their second win over a Big Ten opponent this season after defeating Penn State during spring break.
BGSU was tagged for a solo shot by Michigan's second batter of the game, giving the Wolverines an early 1-0 advantage. The deficit did not last long, however. Junior transfer Jeff Telmanik, making his first start as a Falcon, recorded a sacrifice fly in the top of the second, scoring Senior Tyler Wasserman.
After a one-two-three inning for BGSU in the third, the Wolverines gashed Bowling Green for two runs in the home-half of the inning.
Trailing 3-1 in the fifth, Bowling Green tallied three of their four hits for the game. Back-to-back singles by Freshmen Brian Hangbers and Ryan Shay, followed by a walk, loaded the bases for the Falcons. Junior Kurt Wells hit a groundball to sceond base, scoring a run and advancing all the runners. Junior Josh Stewart then put the Falcons ahead, 4-3, with a two RBI-single to right field. A failed steal attempt by Stewart ended the inning.
Bowling Green's lead lasted for an inning and half before two consecutive wild pitches handed the Wolverines the tying run in the bottom of the sixth. Michigan then took the lead with a pair of unearned runs in the seventh, before adding an insurance run in the eighth to secure a 7-4 lead with one inning remaining.
BGSU had several baserunners in the last two innings, but failed to drive one home, eventually losing 7-4.
The Falcons returns home for a game at Steller Field tomorrow afternoon (Wednesday, March 29). Bowling Green and Heidelberg are scheduled to play at 2:00 PM.
