WACO, Texas - The Bowling Green State University softball team, after four narrow losses at the Compass Bank Invitational, broke through for a 3-1 win over the nationally-ranked University of Washington Sunday morning (March 5). The game was played at Getterman Stadium in Waco, Texas.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 7-4 on the season. The Huskies, ranked 13th in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll and 15th in the USA Today/NFCA poll, drop to 14-6 on the year to date.
BGSU was aided by four UW errors, as all three of the Falcons' runs were unearned. The Brown and Orange scored a run in the first inning and two more in the second to take a three-run lead.
The Huskies had five hits in the game, bunching three of them together in the fourth inning to score a run off Falcon freshman Hayley Wiemer. But, Wiemer responded by retiring the last 11 batters in a row, picking up the complete-game victory.
At the plate, senior Lindsay Heimrich had two of the Falcons' four hits, while classmate Gina Rango had an RBI single to plate junior Jeanine Baca in the opening inning. Junior Emmy Ramsey also had a hit for the Brown and Orange. Both of BG's second-inning runs scored via UW errors.
First baseman Heimrich also had 16 putouts in the game, as Wiemer got most of her outs via the ground ball. She allowed the one run on five hits, striking out four without allowing a walk, to improve to 2-1 on the young season.
UW's Danielle Lawrie took the loss despite allowing no earned runs and four hits. She walked two and fanned four.
The Falcons return to the diamond Sunday afternoon, closing out the Compass Bank Invitational with a 1:00 p.m. CST (2:00 p.m. Eastern) game vs. Mississippi State University.
