WACO, Texas - Mississippi State University scored six times in the bottom of the third inning, handing the Bowling Green State University softball team a 6-1 defeat Sunday afternoon (March 5). The game, the Falcons' final contest at Baylor's Compass Bank Invitational, was held at Getterman Stadium.
With the win, the Bulldogs improved to 18-2 on the season, while the Falcons drop to 7-5 on the year. BGSU ended the weekend with a 1-5 mark, with junior Jeanine Baca and senior Gina Rango being named to the all-tournament team.
After two scoreless innings, BGSU broke on top in the third. Sophomore Dawnjene DeLong and senior Abby Habicht had back-to-back singles through the left side of the MSU infield to put a pair of runners aboard with no outs.
Junior Kari Steigerwald reached on a fielder's choice, with Habicht forced at second, but DeLong taking third. An infield single by Baca loaded the bases, as DeLong was forced to hold at third. After another grounder resulted in a force play on DeLong at the plate, Rango drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk off Stephanie Comeaux, and the Falcons had a 1-0 lead.
The Bulldogs would respond with a six-spot in the bottom of the inning, with nearly all of the damage coming after two outs were recorded. After a leadoff walk, a fly-ball out and an infield grounder resulted in two outs and a runner at second. But, another walk was followed by a Courtney Bures single, with the tying run scoring on a BG error.
MSU's Sammie Jo Bailey followed with a run-scoring single, and Laura Leigh Reese brought a pair of teammates around to score with a double to left-center. A Callye Williams single plated Reese to give MSU a 5-1 lead, and two more singles resulted in Williams scoring the Bulldogs' sixth run.
MSU had a total of nine hits and two walks in the game. Six of the hits, as well as both walks, came in that fateful third inning.
Williams and Michelle Kinney each had two hits for the Bulldogs, while five different Falcons had one hit apiece.
Comeaux got the complete-game win to improve to 10-0 on the season. She walked one batter and struck out four in her five-hitter. For the Falcons, starter Liz Vrabel took the loss. Vrabel, now 3-4, allowed just two hits, but four runs in her two-and-two-thirds innings of work. She walked two batters and fanned four.
Freshman Hayley Wiemer gave up three runs and five hits in relief, while sophomore Emily Gouge allowed just two hits in three scoreless innings of work. Gouge struck out two batters and did not issue a walk.
The Falcons head to Boca Raton, Fla., for next weekend's (March 10-12) Worth Classic. The team is scheduled to play Seton Hall, Campbell, Rutgers and Florida Atlantic once each, before championship play begins on the final day of the tourney.
