BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Falcons suffered a 7-4 defeat in game one at Akron Saturday afternoon. Bowling Green and the Zips resumed play in the top of the ninth after Friday's contest was suspended due to weather issues.
BGSU stormed out to a 2-0 advantage in the top of the first. Junior Josh Stewart and Sophomore Andrew Foster each contributed an RBI to the Falcon effort. Junior Eric Lawson kicked off the third by safely placing the ball in center field with a single. After a sacrifice bunt moved Lawson into scoring position, Foster guided the pitch through the right side of the defense for his second RBI of the game. Then an Akron error in the fifth handed Bowling Green a four-run edge.
Falcon starter Alan Brech was steamrolling through the Akron lineup until allowing a solo homerun in the seventh. The Zips kept the momentum going in the eighth, knotting the score at 4-4 due in large part to three extra base hits.
After a 45-minute rain delay and a collision between a pair of Akron defenders, the game was halted in the top of the ninth with the score still tied at 4-4.
When play resumed the next day, the Brown and Orange failed to tally a run in the top of ninth inning. Akron first baseman, Doug McNulty, ended all thoughts of extra innings as he blasted a three-run homer to left-center for the 7-4 Zip victory.
Bowling Green drops to 20-16 overall and 8-5 in the MAC while Akron improves to 8-25 with a 3-10 conference mark. The Falcons now trail Kent State (9-4 MAC) by one game in the MAC East standings.
